Self employed and mileage
Permalink Closed

I know this probably sounds like a ridiculously stupid question but I just wanted to check something.

If there is a self employed person at a company and he wants to claim mileage from the company that he works for - can he just do this on an expense form and claim 45p a mile. Or as he is self employed should he raise an invoice for it - wouldn't he be taxed on that???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi,

As a self employed person you invoice the company for expenses (where such has been agreed with the client).

To use the clients expenses forms implies employment (same as using clients holiday booking forms).

Legitimate mileage is an allowable expense so you wouldn't pay tax on it.

Have a look at this page for starters and follow any applicable links to the information that you need in relation to self employed expenses :

kind regards,

Shaun.

Hi Shaun,

That has just made me laugh about filling in a holiday form! I was self-employed to a company some time ago and they didn't understand the self-employed bit at all, they asked me to fill out a holiday form even though I pointed out to them that they weren't going to be paying me when I was away. Also I worked for other people, and they told me I couldn't take on anymore new clients!!! Not that I took any notice of them at all and did take on new ones as and when I pleased.

HaHa - telling you you couldn't take on new clients!! A few of my clients think I only work for them and don't understand when I can't be there at their beck and call! Bless 'em!!
