Sage Payroll - Which one?
Permalink Closed

Ive been looking at the Sage payroll packages and Im a bit confused on which one to get.  My training CD has been deleted due to a kind collegue installing new software which was an upgrade not a full program so have no sage payroll at all now cry.

Have looked at Sage payroll instant and sage 50, but there are so many different versions around not sure which is the current one.

Could anyone advise as I dont want to waste my money and find out its an upgrade and not a full program.

Thank you

Hi Michelle,

so, have they found your Colleague's body yet????

I'll leave it to others to advise on the best version of Sage. But just want to say as you seem to be at a crossroads take a look at 12pay or Moneysoft Payroll. Both of which are cheaper than Sage.

You can download one month trials of either or both packages to see if they fit with your requirements.

Anyway. back to the forum for someone to answer the question that you actually asked.

kind regards,

Shaun.

Thank you Shamus for your reply.

I have looked at 12pay but as I have been studying and become very familiar with sage I would really like to stick with it.
I also have sage 50 Accounts so it make sense to keep it all the same. At least for the moment anyway.

No probs,

I knew that I wasn't answering the question asked but I thought worth a mention anyway.

I note no mention of the body... We'll just keep that between ourselves then

Worst that a colleague ever did to me was that they were showing some new trainee's how to backup files... And he deleted (and recreated) the masterfile whilst in another room in the building I was giving a demonstration of a new system that we had developed to the top management of British Aerospace.... All of a sudden, nothing.... Imagine how that looks when your trying to sell an IT system.

After the sales pitch (which we won the contract for) The air was blue back in the office.... Think that was the second closest that I've ever come to fisty cuffs in the workplace.

The colleague was very upset over what had happen to make it worst she had only been with the company just over a week. She was full of apologises. Perhaps I should get her to pay for the new software I now need.........

I have learnt to back everything up twice now after several accidental back up problems once on the computer and then again onto a memory stick, but I can only imagine how you must have felt at the time. I wouldn't have wanted to be in your office that day, glad you got the contract thought.

Hi,

Shamus, I'm giving moneysoft a trial run and will see how I get on I may be converted.

I have downloaded a trial copy of moneysoft payroll and am now wondering if I can change the details for legislation etc back to 2009/10 so that I can practice and possible complete my training using this software.

Just wondered if anyone may have used it to complete their exams??

kind regards

Hi, try clicking File,
New,
Create New blank file - then type in the employer name and see if the underneath drop down list gives you options for earlier years.

best wishes
Tim

hi Michelle,

This could be quite normal if you're comparing with the tables. All computer payroll programs do this and over the year it should even out. Here is a quote from HMRC regarding their own NIC calculator :

The manual National Insurance table figures are calculated on earnings bands, rather than on the exact earnings figure, so results achieved using this calculator may differ very slightly from the manual tables. This calculator provides the accurate figures.

Let us know if you think it might be something else; NI Table letter or anything.

kind regards,
Tim

I have been comparing it to my summary sheets for reference which I got from ICB and an exam sheet and answers, I have done it on sage before the software problem occurred and my answers were the same so very happy.

Now I'm doing the same paper but on Moneysoft and have a difference of the 5p on the NI for all employee's, the tax is all fine all the correct figures showing for everyone.

So am not sure if it my be the way the software works it out???

kind regards

Sage gets a different answer to everyone else, up to about 5p/week or 22p/month.

This is because Sage uses the manual tables whereas everyone else (including HMRC themselves in their own calculators) uses a method called "exact percentage".

Either method is correct as long as you are consistent. HMRC recommends that software packages should use the exact percentage method but it isn't wrong to do what Sage does and duplicate the manual tables.
