Nice to have a friendly forum

I remembered today how lovely it was to have a friendly forum like this.

So many forums (or should that be fora?), espeically the business types, are all about point scoring and showing not how smart you are, but how little others know compared to you.

Most are not about helping, but about putting others down to ascert your own position over them, even if you don't actually know what you're talking about.

My rant for the week.

I'm with you there... Everybody doesn't know everything and what may seem to be common knowledge to one person is completely unknown to another. Other sites make you feel silly, this site just answers the question.

PS I'd say forus... Not fora... Haha!

I think it's down to the excellent job that Shaun does.

Not to take anything away from the job carried out by Shaun, but even in the really early days it was a friendly forum. I think I can only remember a few issues in the 3 years I've been coming on here. My god, 3 years.

Kris

I made a similar point when a prominent poster from another forum joined. Any debates on here were due to trying to get to the correct answer rather than score points over another.

 Cheers Nick biggrin

As Kris indicates though it takes more than one person though to form the attitude inherent on a forum.

I think that one of the big differences on this site is that we say hi and try to offer a warm welcome to every newcomer and when things do go a little haywire we protect and defend each other rather than having the reservoir dogs pack mentality of some of the other sites (think we all know which one I mean!).

One of the nice things on here is that we actually argue and debate without holding grudges.

We've also got a readership that isn't so set in their ways that they don't take on board alternate opinions. I know that there's many occassions where I've entered a thread with one frame of mind and come out the other end with a different one (normally after someone like Bill points me at an HMRC page stateing the exact opposit to my arguement!).

Must say though, the biggest miracle of all on this site is that we have members of the ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW, ICB, IAB, AAT, ATT, IFA and probably a dozen others and we all co-exist quite happily without being disparaging or condescending about each others supervisory bodies.

That has to be a reflection of every member of the site so a big thumbs up to each and every one of the readers and contributors.

Long may the site continue to be the free thinking, unbiased haven for like minded professionals, students and those just inquisitive about moving to a career in finance that it is today.

All the best,

Shaun.

I have to agree. I've been on a lot of forums lol, and this is the main one I have always come back to on a regular basis

I was surprised to find on some of the others that some people have personally attacked me .

I don't think I have ever been really rude to anyone, or attacked anyone, espeicallly on a personal basis or complained about anyone etc etc.... certainly not intentionally....

A happy weekend from me too.

I would like to say thank you to everyone, for making this forum so friendly and very helpful. I also like the fact that you are truthful, sometimes giving people advice they don't want to hear. I cannot express what a difference this has made to me in setting up my new business.  Now I just want some clients, but thanks to you all I am sure that in time I will get some.  I really believe that this forum has reduced my stress level significantly.  One day I hope to be able to contribute more in encouraging others.

Thank you

Sylvia
