ICB Level 111 Manual Bookkeeping
Permalink Closed

Hi Everyone

I am currently studying for the ICB Level 111 Manual Bookkeeping Course, using Kaplan text books, I am stuck on one question: What is the significance of the dividend yield to a company?  I don't understand the question, can anyone help?  I am using the Kaplan books, I am thinking about using a training provider, I was recommeded Training Link, has anyone used them? I can't find any reviews anywhere.  I would appreciate help with the question.

Thanks

Remington

Hi,

it's dividend per share divided by the current share price (*100).

If shows how much money you make from your investment by way of distributions and is important from the perspective of being an income based ratio. (rather than a growth related one).

Personal view is that it's really not that important as ratio's go. But it does give an indication of your percentage return on investment for the year which is a real terms return unlike the easier to manipulate P/E ratio or EPS which will show year on year growth but make little difference to the cash you have in your pocket.

If you need to go with a training provider then training link are one of the better ones along with Premier training and Ideal schools.

If this is the only reason that you think that you need a training provider then before signing away a lot of money it might be worth investing in a couple of additional books as you will often find that not all books cover all material in a way that you will understand.

I really rate Kaplan books but that doesn't stop me buying the BPP versions as well and also normally a few other texts along the way.

You may find Business Accounts for bookkeeping and accountancy students by David Cox, or Business Accounts by Frank Woods and Sheila Robinson (or better still both) quite useful as additional reference material in your studies.

HTH,

Shaun.

Hi Remington

I've used 2 training providers and would def recommend Training Link if you go down that route. I gave up on the other training provider! With training link my tutor always responded to emails within hours, late at night and weekends. Assignments marked within hours too and also their material is good.

It's worth trying the mock first before you buy a course.

Hi

I thank you for your reply about training providers.

I have just completed my study course with my current provider, I have completed all the assignments and received marks of over 95% for every assignment.  I purchased some mock exam past papers from the ICB, when I have read these papers I dont feel confident enough to pass the exam, I need to look at my notes to answer the questions, and obviously you cant do this in the real exam.  Therfore I just feel I need some more training.  I have had Training Link recommended to me by another bookkeeper and I see at the ICB awards one of there tutors was tutor of the year. Could I ask you which training provider you started with, if you dont want to name them I fully understand.

Once again thank you for your advice.

A confused Remington.

Hi Remington,

it would probably be unwise for Ange to say anything untowards about her first training provider as I've heard publishing things such as that, even where such is the truth, can end up with threatening letters of possible legal action. (same rule applies with Franchise companies).

There have been some altercations on the site between students and training providers but thankfully they have been few and far between.

One issue of course is that excellent training companies can have an occassional bad trainer or even a good trainer going through a bad time where there heart is not in their work (tutors being only human at the end of the day).

Also, the best publishers of training material (to my mind Kaplan) can have errors in their study texts. (My latest study text for ACCA paper P2 had 19 A4 pages of amendments published on the Kaplan website! Despite that I still think that it's the best book available)

The one training company that does get slated on here, (won't mention their name) has had complaints about their sales techniques being twinned with those of double glazing salesmen, their prices being two to three times that of competitors and their training materials having errors and ommissions.

That training company is NOT Training link, Premier training or Ideal schools.

I'm not putting accross any training provider as being perfect but some do strive to attain such level of training more than others.

If you really want a training provider I would suggest those three being your initial shortlist. You already have word of recommendation re Training link and Ideal schools recommendations are splattered all over the site (with one notable exception).

Premier training does not have representation on here which is a shame as I would have said that for a while peoples reports on them on the site put them in the lead.

A quick disclaimer from me. I have not used any of the afore mentioned training providers (or the one that shall not be named) myself. I used Open University (course B680) as my first introduction into accountancy and since them have used only the study materials of BPP, Kaplan and Osbourne books (with a selection of additional books and the Godsend of Google!) for my studies.

Kind regards,

Shaun.

Hi Shaun

Thank you very much for your advice and comments, I have ordered the Kaplan Books from ICB for the Level 111 exams, I think I will also enrol with Training Link.

Thanks again

Hi Ange

Have you taken the ICB Level 111 Manual and Computerised exams with Training Link, if so how long did it take you to complete the courses?

Thanks

Remington

Hi Remington

Shaun has made an interesting point about the legalities of forum members posting derogatory remarks about their experiences with training providers, and to be fair a point I never even thought of.

For me open forums give the user a voice where their opinions can be heard, and as a consumer I myself pay for things like my annual holiday based on things I have read on forums. On a personal note as long as a posting is based on fact I cannot see a problem, but I can see Shauns point, love to hear the views of other forum members on this? Has anyone in the UK ever been sued because of a comment made on a public forum?

I know Training Link welcome feedback regardless of positive or negative, and besides as a company you cannot improve without some negative feedback!

Remington I am sure Angela wont mind me telling you that she did do her level 3 computerised with us, in fact I did not want to sell it to her as at that time she had not completed her level 3 manual exam and through our experience students struggle with level 3 comp if they have not completed the manual first. Angela purchased her course in Oct 2010 and requested her exam in Nov 2010.

Who would have thought that 12 months on Angela has her own practice and I believe 15 clients and rising, Angela also went on to be our student of the year and was nominated as ICB Student of the Year, a very determined lady who I wish continued success. To be fair though Remington once you have passed your level 3 manual then the computerised should a lot easier to understand and pass.

Whatever path you choose to take I wish you every success.

Dave

Hi Remington

It took me 2 weeks to do the level III and that was with 2 young children, I only had 2 hours a day to study and do housework stuff! I did have problems booking the level III manual exam but that was down to my personal circumstances and being unable to book a convenient time for me at that the exam centre (didn't realise my local one is only open 3 days a week and on different days each week and I couldn't get childcare booked weeks in advance only a few days before hand and of course they were always booked!).

With the courses I did with training link it didn't take me long at all, the course material is well written and the tutors come back to you very quickly weekends or evenings.

Yes David is right I've had my practice now for just under a year and have 15 clients and have recently turned work down as I work around the children. I haven't done any advertising yet so must be lucky!

Good luck.

(sorry for the late response been busy with work and getting ready to go on holiday tomorrow for xmas).
