Difficult to know which books to pitch to you as you've already got an accountancy degree so much of these will be going over old territory. However, the books that I would generally advise for Book-keeping basic reference texts would be.
Mastering Book-keeping by Dr Peter Marshall AAT Foundation Revison Companion units 1-4 Accounting Skills by Margaret Nicholson Business Accounts for book-keeping and financial accounting courses, David Cox, Osbourne books
Bill (Wella) would also add Business Accounts by Frank Woods and Sheila Robinson to that list.
AAT texts for foundation level studues are always good buys and can be picked up pretty cheaply from Amazon resellers.
For Tax you need to buy tax books annually. Best books that I've found for tax are :
ACCA paper P6 Advanced Taxation Complete Text (Kaplan) - (http://www.amazon.co.uk/P6-Advanced-Taxation-ATX-FA11/dp/0857322907/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1325368611&sr=1-1) ACCA Paper F6 Taxation Complete Text (Kaplan) http://www.amazon.co.uk/F6-Taxation-TX-FA-11/dp/0857322818/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1325368687&sr=1-2
I buy P6 every year but not F6. The Kaplan books are quite hard to get hold of. BPP versions are easy to get hold of but to my mind the Kaplan texts are better.
You can also try the annual Melville taxation book, see here :
The above aside there is no replacement for the HMRC website but the tax books give you a framework to work within and pro forma's for your calculations.
Be warned, tax books are seriously meaty texts! Paper P6 text is A4 sized and almost 6 cm thick.... And that doesn't include anything about telling you how to fill out HMRC returns!
Tax generally is a huge subject. Have you thought about chatting with Frauke about the tax course that she offers?
Hope that some of that helped.
kind regards,
Shaun.

I see what you mean about Kaplan - the worked examples are much better to understand and follow through. Even the explanations for each topic are easy to follow.
Whereas with the BPP book - there is alot of technical information, but not as much worked examples - also it is not always easy to follow.
