I have a client who is in his first year and has registered for volountary vat this year.

He registered for voluntary vat on 01/04/11, the certificate was not issued until 05/09/11 so his 1st quarterly is Sept-Nov ending on 30th November. He has gone over his deadline by a few days now.

What can he claim back.---Can he claim aything from between 1st April and 5th Sept, or even earlier that year when he started up

Advice Appreciated

You can claim Services in the 6 month before the date of registration, and purchases of assets for 3 years before the date of registration provided you still have them.

This is a short answer, someone will be along to add meat to the bones soon, but I need to dash.

ok he can claim things back 6 months before his registration.

He has not charged vat on everything in the 3 months Sept to Nov.

So how about his sales/service before the registration.

There is no vat charged on anything before that because he didn't know he was going to be doing it.  Am I 'barking up the wrong tree'

He can only charge vat on his sales invoices from date of registration, anything before that he can't charge vat for.

Anything like fuel he can't claim the vat back before the registration as its been used up so to speak ie its not an asset and is no longer with him.
