Sure that I'm not alone in this but with ten whole days to go this is actually the earliest I've ever done my own self assessment.
After all of the effort that we go to in order to make sure that our clients are all tickity boo with HMRC isn't it ironic how we, as professionals in this business, leave our own tax affairs until the last possible moment!
Just an observation there. Hope that you're all having a good Saturday.
Off to spend what little money I've got left after paying my taxes now

I in the same boat, I mornally do mine on the 30th Jan!!!! I had good intentions of doing them last weekend, and nearly finished them just need aobut another hour to complete, but guess what took on extra work instead so haven't finished!!!!
Almost finished mine last week just the mileage log (journeys in my diary) to turn into a spreadsheet to do the calculations, hopefully do it tomorrow. Like Amanda I'm going to try and do it earlier next years. Trouble with deadlines is that most people leave it to the last minute.
You lot make me feel terrible, got mine sorted before last summer! Mind you, I trade as a ltd co, so it's just salary and dividends (plus a few bits and bobs), so relatively straight forward.
I can remember leaving it until January a couple of years ago and very nearly forgetting as it wasn't on my list of outstanding tax returns!
I've been going to do mine since 1st december, not got round to it yet. I'll need to do it this week. I'd probably have been quicker if I was due money back, but I don't think I'll owe anything either luckily.
Not trying to be a smart alec, but I did mine in April last year and will be suprised if 2012 is not completed by the end of April this year......
Is it not a wee bit hypocritical to be bleating on to clients all year about getting paperwork in on time (as I do) and then leave yours until the last minute. Procrastination is the devil that sits on our shoulders in this occupation, with online statements of just about everything you need available at the touch of a button, what are you all waiting for???
As it happens I'm sitting here typing up my mileage log - but it's for the last quarter, - again so I'll be up to date on 6th April.
And while we are on the subject there was a terrrible report on BBC Breakfast, and Radio 4 today about how Soldiers were being penalised for not completing SA on time as they are currently serving abroad. Correspondant stated that HMRC should not charge them the £100 penalty for being a day late due to being unable to submit while at sea or whatever. I was flabbergasted and actually start to feel sorry for HMRC when this kind of thing is mis-reported. Absolutely no mention of the fact that, just like everyone else they have had the last 9 months to do it. I respect and value the service these guys give to our Queen and Country, but using them as an example against 'big bad HMRC' was just plain wrong.
No seriously, your right. Its like the story of the cobblers children being shoeless. Ever been in a plumbers house and looked at the radiators? My stepdad is a plasterer but you wouldn't know it from the house.
I don't think any of us will miss the deadline, but like others I like to do work that pays first. Clients want to know everything is done with time to spare, personally I don't mind doing mine late to have theirs in early.
I normally get mine out the way as soon as I can, so its normally the first one of the year I submit.
I have a few military clients who are always the last ones I end up doing every year. I thought this year would be different, because I managed to get them to use drop box to put copies of all the rental receipts they received by e-mail. But I am still waiting for copies of the P60's which they received last April. Personal paperwork is always a low priority with the armed forces. I used to be a military accountant, and spent all my time completeing their claims for them or sorting their pay otherwise they would spend hours in my office asking me how to do it, so in the end it was easier for me to ask the questions, fill the form in myself and then ask them to sign and date the paperwork.
I did mine today (well yesterday now). First one i have had to do as always been a salaried employee but for 2010/11 had some self employment income so hence the reason for having to do it.
Will hopefully see the jobs flooding over the next few months as i recently lost my full time job so has put the emphasise on my own accounting business which was hoping to build up over the next year before doing it full time.
Got quotes for 4 jobs out at the moment which if i can pull them off will give a nice little starter of £16.5k. Oh how i wish i could get another dozen of those kind of jobs.
Sorry to hear the news Mark. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and hope that this year turns into a seriously prosperous year for you.
Shaun.

Although it's happened sooner than expected, it may turn out to be a good thing. I to hope it works out for you, certainly sounds like it will.
I got a taxi driving licence so going to do that while build up business (good in that respect in that can do what hours i want and fit accounting work round about it).
Left practice in June last year after 15 years to go into industry only to find a new FD in place after a couple of months who had his own ideas and i wasnt part of it. Nothing could do about it so upwards and onwards.
