Car or Van

I've had a read of HMRC's guidance on this and still can't decide.  I have a client who has a Nissan Nivara which he uses for work (self employed).

He's just come to me for some bookkeeping and self assessment.  I can't decide whether the vehicle is plant and machinery or not.

Any ideas?

Kris

Ooh, we did this one a year or so back and it's a juicy one. Hang on I'm going to find the old post as it's definitely one that we all need to know for all of our clients who simply must have a 4wd monster truck to go to Sainsbury's!

Back in five.

Darn it, can't find the post I'm looking for.

Annoyed at that as it was one of the first debates with Bill and Myself as contributors.

here's a handy link to a useful snippet from Accounting web :

http://www.accountingweb.co.uk/anyanswers/question/car-or-van

And also a few bits that I picked up from other posts on here whilst doing the search (I think that the second one may be useful to your question Kris) :

- The land rover Defender is a car not a van but if it is the variant with more than nine seats then its a minibus!

- With a pickup, if it has a single row of seats its a van but if it has a double cab it's a car!

- load bearing capacity affects the determination as to whether the vehicle is a car or van.

Is it just me or is anyone else finding the HMRC search facility a lot less useful than it has been in the past? Almost feels as though the search doesn't want us to find the information that we're looking for!

After saying that the HMRC search facility was failing me I just found this although it doesn't cover Nissans :

And this. (plus the links off it).

What a nightmare this is turning into. Now it's not good enough to be a bookkeeper we need to be vehicle examiners too.
