After posting a wage journal

Hi Everyone,

After you have posted a wage journal how do you allocate the payment off so it shows on the bank screen as being paid? Stupid question i know.

Thank you very much

Hi Bex

I'm presuming you are using Sage.......

The wage journal's will have placed the net liability for the salaries into code 2220 (might be different in yours), the PAYE into 2210 and the National Insurance into 2211.

When making the payments to the staff and HMRC you simply use the 'Bank' module, click 'payment' then use the above codes with the respective amounts.

The double enntry if you are processing by way of journal would be

Debit 2220 £xx.xx Credit Bank 1200 £xx.xx
etc

...but it's much simpler to just use the payment option as above.

No such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers, which I hope this is not and helps you....

Ken

Hi Ken,

Thanks so much for your reply and it is definitely not a stupid answer : )

Yes i am using Sage sorry i forgot to say that.

I will use the bank, payment option as does sound simpler.

When you say 'use the codes above with the respective amounts' do i need to break down the whole payment into sections eg: wages, NI, PAYE etc?

Thanks again Ken : )

If you're paying peope their wages then you would do a bank payment to whatever nominal the net wages is in the balamce sheet section (2220 by default). If your are paying HMRC then you would either put the payment to whichever nominal is HMRC or as many do split it between NI and PAYE (2210 and 2211 by default). It all depends on the original journal.

Thank you for your reply Steve.

I have tried to enter what you suggested but when i have paid it in the bank screen its paid too much as i have included what we pay to HMRC for PAYE but we pay that quarterly but on the bank screen it has gone on as the whole amount for example:

The original wage journal:

Gross wages 7000 D £3233.00
Employers NI 7006 D £364.73
NI 2211 C £680.33
PAYE 2210 C £521.80
Net Wages C £2395.60
Totals: Debits £3597.73
Totals: Credits £3597.73

Then when i go into Bank and then payment this is what i entered:

2220- £2395.60
2210- £521.80
2211- £680.33
Total: £3597.73 (as per wage journal)

The only thing is on the bank reconciliation screen states £3597.73 paid out but i only paid the employee the £2395.60 so inst that what should be on the bank screen?

Am very confused.com please help i know i am probably being very stupid but just want it to be right.

Thanks so much to anyone that replies x

Ok the journals seem right and the payments seem right, £521.80 + £680.33 paid to hmrc and £2395.60 paid to the employees bank accounts.

Sort of a bit confused as to what you are saying in the next bit, it might need a bit of an explanation, however if you are saying you actually only physically paid your employees, then you should of only paid them on sage, not NI and PAYE, until you have actually physically paid them. If this isn't what you are on about then sorry I would need a better explanation. smile
