I am very impressed with the great lengths you have taken to pass ICB Level 3 manual exam. I, like yourself have used a training provider and have completed all the assignments successfully. When I completed my course, I still felt I needed more practice to pass the exam. I have purchased all the availble mock exams from the ICB and also the Kaplan books. Could I ask you for some study advice, when you did the manual mock exams did you sit down with a pen and piece of paper and do the mock exam manually or did you do the exam on your computer for instance using excel. I am finding it quite difficult to get through this exam. I would really appreciate your comments and any advice.
Thanks

I don't think I used Excel when doing the manual mocks. I think that would probably just have created extra work for myself. Maybe the occasional time I might have done an extended trial balance on them to save me a bit of time but I can't really think of any other time. I know I went through a lot of sheets of lined paper. There is no Excel in the exam so it isn't really needed. When I did the extended trial balance that was probably overkill on my part.
I get the impression you haven't booked your exam yet and are waiting until you feel confident enough to pass - unlike others who book a date and study according to that date. I would do a mock exam and if I got stuck I'd look at the answers for hints. I'd go through all my mock exams once this way. Second time around I wouldn't look at the answers and if I got stuck I'd leave the question and take a note of it. I'd then re-do this question until I got it right. Most of the mistakes were stupid ones by this time. Then I'd do them all a third time. For me (and my confidence) a pass wasn't good enough - I wanted a pass with as high a mark as possible. I could have sat and passed the exam a lot earlier but I wanted to get that high mark. Some may argue "a pass is a pass" - but the mark was for my own confidence which is generally low.
Regarding the Kaplan books - the only one I bought was the one with all the questions in - not the course book. I got stuck on question 15 and I still think there must have been an error in printing that question as one figure depends on another.

Thank you very much for your prompt response and advice. I haven't booked my exam yet, I don't feel confident enough, although I have spent hours and hours studying. I have 4 clients at the moment I work for, I spend 3-4 days per week working for them, I am trying to fit my studies around my work, some weeks I may do 20 hours study then the next week I might only do 5 hours and then miss for a week. I need to try and arrange a fixed study pattern, did you try and set aside time for study? As I mentioned I have bought 7 mock exams and the Kaplan Bookkeeping Kit with the 29 questions, and plenty of lined paper, I will try and emulate your study methods, I just feel I need a bit more practice to give me the confidence to sit the exam. How are you finding business, have you many clients?
Thanks again for all the advice, very much appreciated, I will let you know how I get on with the exam.
