That's how an ex-colleague of my mine got her first job in accountancy. She'd been a client of the accountant for several years and she expressed an interest in accounting. The accountant recommended she look at the AAT, which she did, and then she volunteered to do a day a week in the accountants office for free. I believe she did this for about 3 months and he then offered her a full-time paid job. I think she's still there now.

Great way to prove yourself, if you can afford to offer your time for free!

Hi Ghis,

Am I right in thinking you are with the ICB?

Sorry if I have it wrong, but if you are the ICB hosts many meetings (37 already this year).

At these meetings there is networking which is a great way to meet members who run their own business and are looking for newly qualified bookkeepers.

A lot of the time they will also give you advice on how to start your own bookkeeping business (if that is what you want to do).

There are 7 events in the next two weeks alone! You can find them here: http://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/myICB/events.aspx

Came across an advert offering 6months unpaid training work!

http://www.gumtree.com/p/jobs/trainee-accountant-book-keeper-admin-payroll-vat-tax--oldham-12k-to-30k/97384336

Can't see if they're chartered or not.

That's the thing who can work full time unpaid for 6 months while still incurring costs such as travel, lunch even childcare, this is what makes getting the right experience so difficult. You cant get a job without the experience and you cant get the experience without a job unless you are willing to live on bread and water for the next six months while living under a bridge.

Was just thinking maybe these kinds of adverts are commonplace. Perhaps you could search for similar nearby. No harm in inquiring Neil, but you'd have to go in with the idea that you'd learn a lot even if there was no job at the end of it.

Yeah i understand that Tim, i also understand that i would have to live with having Rickets and Scurvy but i have emailed them just in case there's a possibility of part time work at present or in future, unpaid voluntary of course.
