Officially, it's the New iPad, not iPad 3. I'm sure there's some logic at work at Cupertino for that.

As you say, you can buy a keypad for it, which just adds to the expense. And then what you have is a computer with a very small (though high resolution) screen.

As for Excel - I expect there's a spreadsheet app for it. (I don't know if there's an actual version of Excel or not). There are certainly such apps for Android.

Sage? There's an iOS app, which should run on the new iPad - but as I understand things, it interfaces with your 'real' Sage, which needs to be running on a Windows box, probably on the same network. The idea is so that you can leave your own desk and still do a bit of Sage data entry, or reporting elsewhere in the office.

Also, bear in mind it doesn't multitask the way a machine running Windows, Mac OS or Linux does - you can't have several windows laid out on the screen, all visible (or partly visible).

To be honest, I think you'd be better off with a proper laptop. And that's not just my automatic anti-Apple bias speaking.

If you want a handy tablet that you can take along to meetings when the laptop would be overkill, get a cheap Android one. (And that *is* mainly my anti-Apple bias speaking!)

I need to upgrade my rather old Dell Laptop (it's still running windows XP!).

I've been looking at the iPad in the Currys store and it looks really good. The price is similar to that of a computer, and you can even get a proper keyboard for it. I also think it would look good when I take it to clients.

Has anyone replaced their laptop/desktop with an iPad? I'm a bit concerned about how you go about loading and running software (Sage, Excel etc).

Cheers

Ben

theres a HP elite book, that has a swivel screen thus doubling it up as a tablet/netbook. might serve you well..... bit more £ than a standard laptop or ipad.... but at least it does both. I have an ipad.... it basically a very expensive way to check emails, and only my teenage daughter uses it now - I find it un-useable as a business tool. Now if apple were to combine an imac with an ipad - genius.
Otherwise I'd stick to a laptop, at least you'll have product support with compatibility issues.

Happy shopping!

Strictly speaking the iPad could be used for your work, there are 3 programmes Keynote (Powerpoint), Numbers (Excel), and Pages (Word)  All £6.99 on the app store at the moment, here's the link for Numbers: http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/from-the-app-store/apps-by-apple/numbers.html

Couple this with that fact you can save and load Excel sheets in it and if you use a storage means like 'Dropbox' (a cloud service with Bank level encrytion and security) you can save them up load to that then work off the computer at home or in the office then visit clients with the iPad to show them results! :D (if you want dropbox let me know as i can invite you and you will get more storage 2.5gb instead of 2!)

This is the method I'm going to use when i get enough cash together later in the year, and offset the price against the business.

Hi Shaun,

I guess I ought to do some kind of introductory post in the 'introductions and time out' forum - perhaps I will when I'm home later. Meanwhile, thanks for the welcome.

And as well as the AAL, I guess you must also like Family Guy. Excellent taste! ;)

Cheers

It's an 'as well as' not a 'instead of' a laptop/desktop. Yes, it can work well for you, but you need a desktop/laptop replacement too.

Thanks all. Think I'll probably stick with a standard laptop for now.

I already have an iPhone so can already access the app store for play time etc. It's just the iPad is soooo shiny and new, must try and resist!

Hi Ben

I've got a iPad 2. Don't use it for work but addicted to angry birds. Great fun!

Makes me smile whenever I see this. There's nothing wrong with XP it's a perfectly good operating system for business. Just because Microsoft have updated doesn't mean they did a better job with the next 2 os's

Also, if you're a dropbox user, look at sugarsync - more storage.

I agree with Tony over XP.

My companies machines run on either XP or Windows 7and both are brilliant OS's.

Now if on the other hand you had said that your old Dell was running Vista that's certainly justification for a change as to my mind that operating system is only one stage removed from a virus. In fact, until Microsoft released W7 Dell refused to stop offering XP as an operating system to people purchasing their machines.

We could not justify the iPads for our business as we use excel and sage for programming. A great alternative which we utilise for presentations etc is the asus ep121 tablet. This a 'proper' windows 7 tablet and is extremely useful. Hope that helps, Jeremy Optegra financial
