Hi Westie,

You're obliged to register for self assessment from commencement of self employment - therefore you'll need to prepare a tax return whether there is a refund or not. From what you say, a refund is likely as you have had tax deducted at source. If you are you a building sub contractor, then most of the tax will be refunded if you have no other income in the year.

I'd say online is easier as it follows a flow-chart procedure rather than reading through the notes until you can request the correct supplementary pages.

Hope you're not registering late as self employed although I haven't come across anyone being fined providing they file a tax return on time.

best wishes
