Personally I quite like Word although I've not used Open Office so for all I know it may be a better product.
I think that my first tip would be quite a basic one. When preparing documents that you want formatted nicely use the text box function for everything. Even put pictures, visio diagrams, spreadsheets and graphs within text boxes as it makes it so much easier to move the presentation of the document around without piictures slipping after text etc. (The document simply becomes a set of tiles that you move around until it's as you want it).
To lose the line around the text boxes simply right click on it, go to the text box properties and set the border colour to white.
Sure that this is one that most people already use but thought that I would put it out there anyway.

You can actually set it to have no border.
My experience of open office wasn't good, I am however completely certain it was due to inexperience with it. It seems to be a good alternative though. I just happen to of acquired word and excel 2007 which works fine, and was free
