Legal right of Lien - fun fact

Another fun fact.

I'm sure that we've all come across the right to retain a clients documents and know how restricted we are in those rights with limited companies (Companies act trumps lien).

Solicitors have far wider ranging rights but the one that surprises me is the legal right of Lien of hotel owners and inn keepers.

Basically they have a right to keep everything of a customer until they pay... Except their horse.

They can keep your clothes, your car, everything. But if you arrived on a horse at least you've got transport home.

Wondered why lady Godiver went through the streets of Coventry with no clothes on. Now I think that I know. She stayed at the holiday inn but forgot her credit card!

right, back to more serios posts.

Thanks for the interesting facts Shamus,

The next time I plan on having a heavy session down the local pub i'll bear your comments in mind.

Ben

Artificer rights of lien in the motor trade allow you to keep a vehicle until payment is received, if you have improved it (ie servicing isn't covered)

The exception are taxis and ice cream vans
