gift aid payment

Hi there,

I'm currently doing a clients self-assessment.

The client has a charity payment made of £40.00

I have entered this on the return, bu then when I come to view a break down of the tax calc, it is showing a payment due of £10.00 is this correct?

Doesn't make sense to me for the person to pay tax after they have donated to charity

many thanks lor

This can happen if they isn't a taxpayer but have signed a gift-aid declaration stating they are.

Might disappear when/if you have entered the accounts/employment/investment income etc.

With Gift Aid, the taxpayer has to have paid the amount of tax that the charity claims back from the taxman. If the self-assessment has calculated that the person is not due to pay any tax (as opposed to not owing any more tax having already paid the correct amount through PAYE) then the person has to refund HMRC the amount the charity claimed.
