Good week so far for new clients but all seem to be in an absolute mess!
Just picked up a new limited client whose annual return is way overdue. They've received a gazette notice saying the company will be struck off if the record isn't brought up to date.
If I submit the annual return now will this automatically stop the striking off or do I still need to write to/contact companies house?

If they have just received the gazette notice (and this is the first one) then there is no immediate panic as takes 3 months for the company to be struck off.
Would submit the return ASAP though and contact Companies House helpdesk to see if anything further needing done (would also check companies house website in the next week to see if the notice to strike off has been removed)
Is there any notice of when a proposal to strike off is removed? One of the companies I monitor is a customer of my brothers' company. I just noticed they've been issued with a GAZ1 notice. I assume it's just because they've failed to file their annual return (their accounts are not due until end of December).

There isnt any notice when a proposal to strike off is removed.
It isnt normal that a notice to strike off is submitted when an annual return is late (if that was the case there would be 1000s of notices each day).
If i was you then would advise your brother to make sure all monies due from the customer are up to date as most likely reason for the notice is that the directors have submitted it and are looking to wind up the company as it is not viable going forward or someone else eg HMRC, creditor has petitioned to have company wound up as there are monies outstanding.

On further reading it is because the Annual Return is three months late - it was issued exactly three months afetr AR was due so I think it is Companies House the reason behind it. I will make my brothers aware of the issue. I don't think there is too much money owing at the moment.
