Advice please on how best to prepare for the Self Assessment exam
Permalink Closed

Hi

Thank you all for the great topics and discussions which I have found most informative over the past few months.

As this is my first post a little intro ...
My background has been over 35 years in various accounting roles in different industries and business sizes including managing finance departments. I'm in the process of setting up my own practice and have recently obtained my practice licence with ICB.

I am working through ICB's Self Assessment workbook and wondered if anyone who has taken this exam or if you have taken an equivalent would be so kind as to advise me on:

-Is there any need for any further study material in order to complete the exam?

-What would you recommend?

-Are there any specific areas you found tricky that would be useful to know?

-I couldn't see any mock papers for Self Assessment does anyone know of any?

-Are there any alternatives out there?

Many thanks for your guidance
Brigitte

The only further study material you need is the booklets from HMRC - and in my opinion you do need them as well. When I sat the exam I didn't think the workbook was enough. That was before learning providers were doing the course - but you're not using them anyway. It was also when HMRC would happily send out hard copies of their booklets - now they want you to download them. I much prefer hard copies so it would mean a lot of printing if I were to download all the booklets, worksheets etc today.

At the time I did the exam there were no mocks available but I was under the impression there were mocks available now. Although I could be getting mixed up with the payroll exam which also didn't have mocks at the time I did it.

Hi Peasie

Many thanks for your quick response.

I haven't worked through the whole book yet but like you feel I would need additional (more complete information) not just for the exam but also to offer a good service.  When did you take the exam?

You mention the booklets from HMRC would you know if there is a listing of them all or is it a question of clicking all the links on their site?  I too would prefer the hard copies and know I have everything so it sounds like I may be doing a lot of printing.

Still no mocks for this in the store that I can see.

Thanks again

Brigitte

I would just read through the book and any mention of an HMRC book, leaflet, worksheet, whatever then just search for that booklet number and then no doubt that will lead to others.

I took the exam in September 2010.
