I am using Sage instant accounts. I have just completed my end of year accounts.
I need to pay off invoices that relate to last years accounts. So for example, I owe British Telecom £170.00 for an invoice in March 12 that was paid in April 12. (My end of year was 31st March 12)
I can see in the list of suppliers the total of £170.00 but if I go to bank to pay this off it is not showing.
Not sure I have explained my question properly as I have not had any replies!! I lay awake last night and suddenly thought I wondered if I had not changed the end of year date correctly when doing the end of year. Would that explain why invoices I had posted for the current year are now showing now?
If so I guess I will have to restore my accounts from my back up disc and do it all again.
Sorry that you've not had any replies yet. Its not that people are ignoring you.
I did read the message last night but as soon as I get to the word Sage I always just move onto the next message and I think that there are an increasing number of people on the site who do the same (would that business owners followed suit on that product!).
I'm sure that a Sage expert will however be along imminently to sort out this issue.
Sorry for not being more helpful in this instance,
Shaun.

Thanks for your reply - I was begining to wonder why no-one had replied!!
So Sage is not popular? I have always used this but would be happy to be recommended to something better. I am a self taught bookkeeper that has done our family business books for the past 20 years. Not sure how my accountant ever sorts out my end of year figures although I try to be very methodical and neat!!
Tell me what package you prefer PLEASEeeee! Christine
I use VT Accounts which also comes with a copy of VT Transaction+.
You can get a 60 day trial to try it out. Most people who are quite happy with the manual side of bookkeeping love it but it is very different to Sage. (to my mind a lot more user freindly and could easily resolve the accrual problem that you've encountered in your first post as under the hood it's basically a spreadsheet).
One great thing about it is that you can run an unlimited number of businesses from it so great for bookkeepers and accountants who don't want to pay the Sage client tax.
For payroll many people on here tend to use either 12pay or Moneysoft payroll. Both are very similarly priced.
For tax software there seems to be strong leaning towards Taxcalc although I'm currently having a play around with QMS.... Still not sure if I like it yet.
There's a thread on here called "Convince me that I don't need Sage" which took on a life of it's own and became a great place to hear peoples thoughts about the various bits of software.

To my mind, Sage is like the Microsoft Windows of accounting/bookkeeping software - when alot of people think of doing the books, they think Sage, but for no really good reason. People use Sage because the jobs they are applying for seem to never ask for anything else. People use Sage because their accountant says so. People use Sage because they haven't heard of anything else. And Sage charges alot of money for the standard product, then takes the opportunity to get as much out of you as it can with what Shaun calls their "client tax". Just, IMHO, the sort of thing Microsoft does with Windows, Office, etc.
And just like Windows, there are alternatives which are cheaper, or free, or (again, IMHO) simply better.
I am firmly in Shaun's camp with regard to Sage, and from what I have read here, I would not use Sage by choice. But I'm in the job-seeker camp so I have gained a little familiarity with it, although not enough to answer your question (and I only use Windows when I have to as well!).
Re your question.
The problem you mention could have been caused by any number of things (he says, not really knowing, but talking from experience of software problems in general). So perhaps if you could post additional information; things like how the relevant transactions were originally entered into Sage, with codes and so on, what has happened with bank reconciliations, what options or other actions were used at the end of year run (especially things that would affect transactions, such as deleting stuff from the old tax year), what the current details of the invoice in the suppliers list says, and so on, then perhaps someone can see something amiss and home in on the problem from that.
Thanks to you both for your advice. It has really made me think about Sage and why I use it - habit really. The daft thing is I do everything on excel and then enter it all again into Sage because I know I can change things in Excel if I do it wrong. I don't do Sage well enough to be able to trust my Profit and Loss reports or Trial Balance. (I feel quite embarassed saying all this when there are so many clever book-keepers on here!) I feel confident that my excel spreadsheets are very accurate. I am seeing my accountant next week so I shall have a chat with her and will have a look at VT accounts too. This is such a good time for me to give up Sage, I feel quite liberated! Thanks again. Christine
we're just busy making the world a better place curing one Sage user at a time. lol.
Seriously though, VT costs nothing, not even your details to download and if you love spreadsheets it's perfect for you.
VT Transaction+ is stand alone but VT accounts exists within Excel as an add on.
kind regards,
Shaun.

Unlike many on here i am a SAGE fan (having worked in practice in 15 years it is the main accounts package that clients use). I also teach SAGE at beginners and intermediate level at a local enterprise company.
I didnt reply to your query as i didnt understand it. As Rob says would need more details of what you have posted and where you are going into to clear it off. If you have posted as a Purchase Invoice then when you go into the bank module and select supplier then select the BT supplier code then it should come up as outstanding so you can clear it of with a purchase payment transaction.
Though the practice i work in at the moment have a number of clients who use VT. I have my own small accounts practice and have bought a 25 client manager package this year for the ones that i do bookkeeping for. But for next year i am going to look at doing them on VT transactiions as i use VT accounts to do my final accounts and there is a lot of people on here who swear by VT transactions for bookkeeping. (will also add about £900 onto my bottom line if i dont buy SAGE next year).
I dont do payroll as outsource it. Use taxcalc for CT and personal returns.
Like most human traits it is probably the fear of learning something out of my comfort zone that is putting me off at the moment. But will be looking at VT transactions in the next year.
Sorted!!! I restored my pre-end of year back up and went through the year end process again. I think what I did before was to clear the audit trail up to todays date instead of end of year date! So now my invoices posted last year but need paying off this year are all there. Stupid, stupid mistake!
I can now get my end of year accounts to the accountant and start looking at VT.
Thanks to you all for your help and for releasing me from Sage!
