Welcome to the forum,

I didn't know that a bookkeeping degree was offered as a qualification.

Look forward to reading your posts.

Ben

Hi Anna,

welcome to the forum,

Nice looking and well laid out website,

kind regards,

Shaun.

Hi Ben,

quick discussion about the bookkeeping degree. (Hope it doesn't take the welcome off piest).

There are all sorts of qualifications out there many not worth the paper that they are written on.

My diploma in debt management and Credit control was from such a company.

The actual content coverage of my course was good (although I think that I knew more about the subject matter than the tutor did!) but the qualification isn't really recognised.

Problem was that nobody else did the sort of short course qualification (12 week correspondence course) that I was looking for and I didn't want to join the ICM where Credit Control was something that I wanted to pickup, get a bit of experience in and then move on as I regard it as part of our job, not an end in itself.

Similarly there are bookkeeping and accounting qualifications out there that are not recognised. The Syllabuses often plagerise the main bodies (but at least one of the main bodies has also been guilty of that one!!!).

At the end of the day Anna has six years Sage experience, she is covered for MLR, she has testimonials from satisfied clients. So the degree whoever it may be from is immaterial.

Where this would be amiss is if someone was tricked into a non recognised qualification and took it in the belief that in itself it would provide the knowledge to open doors and then open a bookkeeping business without experience on the back of it.

We all know that there are plenty of those bookkeepers around (who I actually feel sorry for as they have often been conned out of a lot of money) but such is not the case with this poster who has the background of quantifiable experience.

kind regards,

Shaun.

I see your also ICB qualified. What was that like in comparison to your degree? I ask because I may be diverting my learning route.

And hi welcome to the forum.

That confused me, when I saw the ICB logo because there is no practice number quoted, and the MLR reference looks like it might be an HMRC reference. The ICB logo can only be used by members in practice, and as a member the ICB says you must quote your practice number but you cannot be MLR supervised by HMRC, if you are a member in practice of the ICB  confuse

Oh dear Bill,

it gets worse,

just did a search of the Wales business Directory and the business is recorded as Avalon Bookkeeping Services LTD. (same telephone number as the site).

If you check companies house there is no company of that name.

The above aside the ICB logo is a link to the ICB website which, giving the poster the benefit of the doubt may be that they did not understand the implications of such association and thought that it was simply a helpful link rather than implying connection to the ICB.

Alternatively they may have only recently become a member of the ICB and were previously registered under HMRC.

I try to always see the best in people but have to admit that the combination of :

  • Bookkeeping degree
  • ICB logo
  • Use of Limited status where the name has never been incorporated

Really needs to be explained.

As you say, if the poster is now ICB they need to quote their ICB number.

Hi All,

My first reaction was webpiter spelling needs to be improved (!) Personally I can figure them out. The online profile says they are Male, born in March 1990 (so current 22yrs).

The website recommendations are for "Anna Raikes" (who I also found on LinkedIn which says the business has been trading since 2007!) - so he/she would have been 17 when she started the business and only 7 years old when he/she worked in Flintshire.....

webpiter, if you read this, may I suggest you update your profile honestly etcs????
