A nice comment from a client today. We do the accounts for four of his companies but another accountant does three other recently acquired companies. Conversations are being had about us taking on the three companies because, in his words, "There's no fun to be had with her. She does everything she has to, but there's no joy with her!" Nice to know that we bring joy to our clients' lives!
I will say that one tenet of the business is that each client should see us as part of their team, as opposed to an outsider who turns up once a week/month/year and asks difficult and unwelcome questions. This approach seems to be working!
That is nice to hear, and a reminder that even in bookkeeping "the bottom line" is not the only thing that matters - human relationships are vital.
I am not actually a bookkeeper, but I can see that there is a structural reason why bookkeepers and accountants are sometimes not popular, unfair though it might be. My father was a solicitor, and he always used to say (humorously rather than bitterly) that one problem with his profession was that if a client lost his case, he certainly blamed the lawyer, but if the client won, he wasn't that grateful to the lawyer because he regarded that result as simply justice!
It's similar for the bookkeeper or accountant, sometimes, who must occasionally ask difficult and unwelcome questions and give bad news. But it is good when he or she does so from a position of "Here is the bad situation I have uncovered - and here is how we can deal with it in the best way available" rather than "Here is the bad situation I have uncovered - and here is my bill."
Nice one Liz and I'm sure that the praise was absolutely well deserved
kindest regards,
shaun.
