@Shaun - thanks.

I just think that bookkeepers/accountants need to up their game if they want to have a profitable, enjoyable and sustainable business. Specifically, they need to do more than the basics and they need to be good at marketing, selling and pricing.

It's my view that the amount of bookkeeping/accounting work is reducing because of a) smarter technology (e.g. Xero and Receipt bank) b) more sophisticated clients and c) outsourcing offshore.  It's also my view that prices are under pressure because of more competition (e.g. more accountants are offer bookkeeping and Websites like People Per Hour).

With these two factors I beleive bookkeepers and accountants need to respond and add value and i.e. do more for clients. One option is to get involved with profit improvement services.

In my mind there is no reason why we as bookkeepers/accountants cannot help clients improve their profits. Not by telling them how to be a better builder or whatever they do but by helping them be better at strategic planning, pricing, business development and management.

If you are interested I have written an article and produced a free tool http://accountantadvisor.co.uk/improving-your-clients-profits/

Hi Bob,

some really useful outside the box thinking there that makes a lot of sense.

I think that the post by Gill last night is reflective of the pressures upon a lot of bookkeepers in these times when businesses are battening down the hatches and making every penny count and anything that makes people think beyond their normal boundaries has to be a good move in the right direction.

kind regards,

Shaun.
