Can anyone give me a pointer on what is happening with the 100% Small Business Rates Relief please.

Any announcements about it continuing after April 2013?

Many thanks.

Did they announce the end of recession yet?

Tim and myself both work in a small town where it was reported that something like one third of the business' in the

town centre were charity shops. If you take into account that one third are fast food and cheap (not so visitable (new word))

cafes and one third are no win no fee PPI claims companies, there's nowt decent in the town.

All this from an highly industrial town which at one time could report a large number of working factories and mills.

The world changes for the better? I remember when everybody round here either worked in a factory or worked in a mill.

The pressures of parenting were near zero as all kids had the same, nowt. There was no pressure to 'keep up wi' joneses'

as they had nowt too. Lulz..........

Hi Neil,

There may be more at the pre-budget report on 5 December but the Chancellor has already announced greater autonomy for local councils. Can see the small business relief surviving that.

I hope so, it has been great for us so far. Really reduced the figure we had to hit on a Monday morning just to pay overheads.

Now we don't start work 'til 10:30 am on Mondays lol.

lol, when was greater autonomy for local councils ever a good thing...

In the ACCA studies it gives the reasoning behind local government issues as two fold :

1) Local Government has no concept of capital as a scarce resource

2) Local Government is rewarded for failure with larger budgets.

Come March I'm expecting to get landed with Rates plus the full 5.6% rise.

Also, all of the businesses in my street have received rating queries this week (VO 6003's) so suspect that we are also going to get an eye watering rise seeing a return to empty, shutters down, high streets.

Bah humbug

Same story here matey although different industry.

thirty years ago it was a thriving mining community with at least seven local pits... And we all know what happened to that industry.

We also had Armitage shanks which was bigger than the village that the factory was in (that went to Germany).

And a huge powerstation (That followed the pits into oblivion.

In the last year we have seen an upsurge of small shops pushing the charities out but it's all one big game of kerplunk out there. One wrong move and it all comes tumbling down.

Business rates will be a wrong move as would an increase in interest rates.

There needs to be a change of mentality that supports rather than punishes entrepeneurial spirit.

The Government make all the right noises but somewhere between their words and actions things get lost.

As for claims companies I would love to see a no win no fee service appearing for employers where those sueing at the drop of a hat are put at real risk of ending up losing their houses on the back of frivelous claims.

It was on the radio the other day about a Business in Brum that was eternally being sued but rather than just pay up they fought and won ever case brought against them.

The claims companies are not geared for that as they just expect companies to pay up without a fight on the grounds that court costs may cost more than the claim.

Unfortunately the business that won every case has now been closed by its owners as whilst no case had any merit the costs could not be brought against those making the claims.

On the back of that almost 300 people lost their jobs.

Just hope that they all popped around to the people making the claims and took it in turn to beat the living s**t out of them... That would give them something to claim for.

note that I'm not against legitimate claims made for genuine bad / dangerous management that puts peoples lives / health / sanity at risk. However I feel that such is a tiny fraction of the actual claims made.

No humbug about it.  There's no accountability.  For one, that voting by thirds should go and elect them all every 4 years.   Oh and anyone who doesn't pay business rates shouldn't vote LOL

Yep Neil, all that wealth gone.  I read somewhere that in 1900 Oldham had more millionnaires than anywhere in the country - prob something to do with why Churchill was the MP.

Yeah but your wrong is so right Timbo lol.

I still can't see any new business popping up that employs a good chunk of people in our area.

They just spent 60k on an allotment on Langley though so drinks all round.
