If you go into the customer account and click the activity tab then they are all listed in the top pane, as invoice totals in a single line, they are seperated in the bottom pane into the seperate nominals.
hmmm - maybe there are some display options that need altering for that tab ?
at the moment, the top half of the screen lists all the individual lines for multiple invoices (with no invoice totals), and when you highlight one of these entries, just that single transaction appears in the lower window
if this worked by showing a list of invoice totals in one window, and expanded to show the various lines that made up that total in the other window when selected, that would be perfect !
here's a screenshot showing the current set up - you can just about make up that the top screen has (in some cases) multiple lines for the same reference (invoice), and that when selected, the single entry appears in the other window

is there any way - when viewing transaction summary screens for particular customers in Sage Instant Accounts - that invoices which have multiple lines can be shown in summary form, with just the invoice totals viewable rather than a separate entry for each line ?
we issue some invoices with fifty or more separate lines, each being an individual item - at the moment, this is shown on screen in full, giving an awful lot of data to scroll through or search through when searching for information
been able to tweak report set up to ensure that this short form is how statements are now produced, which is great, but it would be handy if the same abbreviated display option was available within the programme too
any advice very much appreciated - thanks in advance
Yuo can set "Global" nominal and tax on the invoice Footer tab I think

From memory, I don't think there's an option for this.
However, in the latest (last couple of?) versions of Sage 50, it does show just a single line with the total for the invoice in the upper pane of the customer account 'activity' screen, and highlighting that line shows the breakdown in the lower pane - so I would have expected this same approach to have appeared in Instant by now (although there's no guarantee). What version are you on?

If you run a customer activity summary in reports this will show all activity as invoice totals in a single line, if that is what you are after.
thanks - but i'm guessing that's just a slightly differently formatted version of the statements that we can currently produce with invoice totals; what's really required (for some reason) is for that information to be displayed within the programme itself rather than on an "external" report - from what i can gather, it would be useful for checking off incoming payments, but i'm not the guy who actually uses it, just the one who has to address the problems that are thrown up

Is that the 2012 version? (Sage 50 2013 is v19, and I believe the same year/version number correlation applies to Instant).
As I said, 50 now uses a double pane approach to customer (and supplier) activity, with the invoice shown on a single line in the upper pane, and a breakdown in the lower pane. I'm surprised Instant doesn't do that by now, because it's such a lot more usable that way.
I note you mention having a single line checking off payments - this is a different screen and, unfortunately, it's not an option - the payment allocation screen shows each line individually, with no alternative. As yet - who knows, maybe Sage will learn a new trick in a future version. (Even as I type this, I can visualise how this could be done on screen and still allow specific lines to be allocated when a customer only part pays an invoice, so Sage with its teams of programmers ought to be able to work it out eventually).

Instant does do that. I'm sat in front of it and it shows exactly what we have both just described.
In that case, the OP is probably confusing the customer activity with the customer receipts screen, as per his comment about checking off payments.
that may very well be the case - apologies if my ignorance is causing confusion, as I say, I'm not the sage user, just been asked to dig around for an answer !

Well, judging by the screenshot you've attached, there's no confusion after all: That is indeed the customer activity tab Rhianrach and I were talking about, but it's not displaying things the way either of us described. Perhaps my question of the version number is the answer, after all - perhaps you need the very latest version?
Rhianrach: What version are you on?

It'll be the pre-war wind up version as they have yet to receive leccy where Steve is lol.
Haha what's this black magic you call electrickery then?
It's the latest version Vince, we pay for support so they keep us updated. For some reason that screenshot is seperating out references, which mine doesn't, I think there may well be a setting somewhere, maybe the OP might want to ring Sage and see. Unlees it has something to do with the way the invoices are inputted, I can't think for the life of me how though.
thanks to everyone for persevering with me - I'll get on to sage and make sure that we have the latest version, see if that sorts things out - failing that, i'll be on to the helpline to find out what's going on
thanks again - all suggestions and guidance very much appreciated !
if you could all come round and be as much help with painting my bloody staircase (all old fashioned turned banister spindles) then that would be fantastic....
Thinking about it, if you are batch invoicing and you input the same invoice but on two separate lines it may separate them regardless of having the same reference. This might not be the case but then again it might be.
oh well - having spoken to all parties concerned, it seems to be an issue with the format in which our third party MIS package presents the data for import in to Sage; I can get other invoices with multiple lines to display exactly as they should do with the top pane = single entry/bottom pane = expanded view format, but those from our MIS steadfastly refuse to work, so therein lies the problem !
hey ho - and thanks again for everyone's assistance...
Oh trust me Neil I'm not getting experience in anything like what you are studying
It's purely bookkeeping and even though I keep prodding the accountant, because they are external, they wont give me any means to gain accountancy experience, as this will reduce their fees, (should reduce their fees, probably wont ).
So like yourself I am still chasing the elusive accounting experience, hence the sudden halt with the studies and looking at a bit of a different direction, more relevant to the experience I am gaining.
