HMRC Agent to be...please advise
Permalink Closed

Dear Reader, I am an ACCA student with a number of years experience as an un-qualified accountant, both in terms of managerial and financial accounting. I am considering freelancing part time. I like working with tax and after completing F6 - Tax, I think I want to get into tax properly and register as an agent with HMRC. As a person that believes in the principal - look before you leap, I am looking for some advice as to the Do's and Don't or any tips on how to get started. Kind Regards Afroz

Hi Afroz,

welcome to the forum.

As an ACCA student you are restricted by regulation 8 as to the services that you can offer.

Basically bookkeeping to trail balance, VAT and payroll.

No advice, no tax work and no filing of final accounts.

I know, it's awful. Someone straight off the street can read a book and then file accounts. Someone who has been studying for 6-10 years and has some experience isn't allowed anywhere near tax or accounts unless directly supervised.

The regulation 8 issue has been covered on the site quite a few times. I'm a bit short of time this evening but if you enter this sarch you will see the minefield that you are venturing into :

(just cut and paste this into Google).

Site:www.book-keeers.org.uk ACCA "Regulation 8"

I'm usually all over that subject so we'll probably be talking again over the weekend when you've had chance to have a read.

kind regards,

Shaun.

Hi Shaun,

Thanks for your input. So does this mean that I should be okay to act as agent for vat returns for companies? I take this a glass half full situation. In truth I was not sure if that was even possible. Do you know what people normally do to get started. Is it important to first get register as an agent to file VAT on behalf of clients and then prospect for customer or is it better to do it the other way round, where one should seek out customer first and then seek to register as an agent with HMRC.

Kind Regards

Afroz
