I have a client who we have done a Self Assessment Return, and I have two queries.
The first is that having done the Return on line, the HMRC software calculated that the tax due was £163.00. I know its not much but I worked it out to be £147.00. Does she pay the £147.00 and ask to dispute the £16.00 difference. I did ring the HMRC when I got the calculation, but because she had had a period of working for some other companies on PAYE, they could not tell me if she should have paid some extra tax with these other companies.
Secondly, beacause we have submitted her Return through my Agent account, will she get a paper Notice through the post from HMRC before January 31st, stating what she owes?
For the sake of 16 quid I would just overpay, I know it's against principle but I wouldn't argue with HMRC as they will fine her and then charge interest if you don't.... Not pretty! Personally I would pay it then dispute it and get the money back than go through the afore mentioned rigmarole.
Second point, you should both receive something, her letter should have a tear off slip that she will need to take to the bank with a cheque/instructions for BACS payment, and you will receive a copy of the 'front page' saying 'this is what we sent your client and she owes..... '
I can't be certain but it looks like you're not the registered agent for this SA individual, otherwise the Revenue would give you earnings and tax with the "other companies". If you are the agent, then phone again, and you might get a different answer!
If it is just the online HMRC software that is causing the difference, then where exactly does their calculation differ from yours?
You say you received an HMRC calculation. Is this because there has been a correction to the SA?
