Possible illegal uses for a pro forma invoice
Permalink Closed

We deal with many companies all over the world and regularly do business using pro-forma invoices. Just recently however we have been contacted by a number of people who claim to have seen our products on the internet and wanting to buy. They then request a pro-forma invoice which has bank details allowing them to pay. If we provide such a document, are we opening ourselves to any danger, assisting some other criminal activity or are there no details of use contained?

Thanks for any advice or experiences.

Just my own thoughts on this one

If you are having doubts about the legitimate use your pro forma invoices are being used for, why not make sure the wording on them reflects their purpose.

Have a clear heading "Pro Forma Invoice" followed by "Not a VAT Receipt", and possibly add something like "This is a request for payment only. An invoice for your accounts will be supplied on receipt of your payment"

Wont stop them being used incorrectly but may make you sleep better at night.

Bill
