I have downloaded 12Pay for payroll and not used it yet but it looks absolutely idiot proof :o)
Make something idiot proof and they just invent a better idiot. lol
Actually, more seriously though, that one's not free. You just get a one month trail so good idea to check it out as sooon as you download it. (same with Moneysoft Payroll).
12pay also have some excellent instruction videos plus of course we have Tom on here so everyone keep him happy by buying his companies product.
For free payroll software for micro businesses there is always HMRC's software but I wouldn't recommend it.
On the bookkeeping front VT Cashbook is free but it's for end users not professionals. For that you would need VT Transaction+ which comes with a generous 60 day full functionality trial rather than the 30 days of most other software. If you go VT I would advise getting VT Accounts which comes with VT Transaction+ thrown in as I don't know about yourself but I find to learn anything new I need to see the figures pushed through to final accounts.
After learning VT using VT Accounts just take up the licence for VT Transaction+ if that's the only part that you need.
For CRM software just use Excel. I find using CRM specific software the equivalent of getting someone else to wallpaper your house. It's nothing that you couldn't do yourself easily but it seems better if you get a professional in to do it and then you realise that you could have done a better job for less money in the first place.
kind regards,
Shaun.

Just to clarify, with 12Pay you get 6 periods (ie 6 weeks in a weekly payroll and 6 months in a monthly payroll) of free payslips and management reports.
And in fact compliance (ie calculations, HMRC filing etc) is completely free for as long as you want to run our software, for micro-businesses that don't want/need payslips.

Darn it...I thought the trial version didn't expire but was restricted to 3 companies x 10 employees i.e. 30 employees altogether? I got all giddy thinking I had a freebie
I'm sure that I downloaded it in the past and it expired?
Oh well, I'm probably getting it mixed up with a different trial.
Anyway, just went and got it again... Another one to add to the to do list (which is definitely growing at the bottom faster than they're disappearing from the top!).
many thanks,
Shaun.

For compliance purposes it doesn't expire. You can do your RTI stuff and P11P32/P35/P45/P60 printing etc forever, for free. So it depends on your needs. The trial period for payslips and management reports is 6 payroll processing periods in each company.
not free but my statement about the licencing was either out of date or just plain wrong. (I think the former as I really am sure that my original download expired).
The restriction on payslips / management reports seems a lot better trial for Muppets like myself that download software with the best intent then come to play with it as couple of days before the trial expires! (or even after the trial has expired in some cases).

Yes I know that scenario all too well! Currently got a wacky races situation with Access 2010 to discover if it really would help my client (and whether I can fathom self-taught database construction) before my Office Prof trial runs out later this month...no pressure then.
