can you please advise if mobile therapists can claim any business expenses related to lunch - someone had told a client that they could claim £2.50 per day?! i dont think this is right but wanted to check as they are mobile - can they claim sundries perhaps a month for coffee etc to take with them? i think she has been given the wrong info, many thanks

You are correct. The client cannot claim for their lunch.

Also, in this instance they cannot claim for purchasing coffee.

If they had premises and purchased supplies (tea/coffee/milk) for all staff then that would have been an allowable expense.

As a sole trader all that they are doing is drinking the same tea and coffee that they would have done had they not been working and HMRC are not going to be looking to compensate where a taxpayer consumes their beverages.

Hope that helps,

kind regards,

Shaun.

Personally I take a more pragmatic view and allow reasonable subsistence costs rather than fixed amounts per day costs.

As they should only be able to claim what the have spent.

But take Shaun's view that we eat to live rather than eat to work and duality of purpose of expense.

Regards

Mark
