Cafe within a training provider - where do we stand with VAT please
Permalink Closed

Hi,

This is my first post so please be gentle.

I work for a training provider within a local authority.  We have recently built a training cafe which will be used as to teach students and provide staff lunches.

As a complete newbie to VAT i was hoping someone could point me in the right direction regarding my responsiblities in overseeing the Business.

Thanks in advance

Hi Pompey and welcome to the forum.

Two things spring to mind and they are hot food and, as always with cash businesses, pilfering.

If there is any take-away food sold then I'd start by having a read of the VAT leaflet 709/1
http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000160&propertyType=document#P8_132

The rules are unsettled at the moment and you could do worse than have a read of this article from today:-

http://www.bakeryinfo.co.uk/news/fullstory.php/aid/11156/Subway_takes_VAT_fight_to_Downing_Street.html

To prevent pointed fingers when the till balance is out (down), everyone who uses it should identify themselves when opening the till drawer. You may already have a till with a log-in identifier. Another simple step (where only one person man's the till at a time) is for the staff member to count the balance on commencement and completion of each shift. In other words, the balance is counted twice and agreed, when someone takes over.

I'm being gentle but dying to ask if the training is done in the cafe :)

kind regards,

Tim

Thanks for your reply Tim.

As it will be used for staff lunches, items like sandwhiches and baguettes will be sold as a "take away" item (although they may only take it away to their desk within the building)

As for training....there is the possibility that we will placed students, who wish to pursue catering qualifications within the cafe.

I don not imagine that our turnover will be over the current threshold figure but I'm just looking for some direction or advice regarding my responsibilities Re. VAT.

Thanks
