P800/tax returns
Permalink Closed

HMRC have sent one of my clients P800 for the last few years.  They say he owes them quite a few thousand in tax.  On looking at his paperwork I think the figure is actually larger than the one given by HMRC as they don't seem to have included some of his income in their calculations.  HMRC have now decided that rather than just collect the tax they want him to complete tax returns for the years concerned.  I have said that if I am doing the tax returns I would need to see all the documentation and fill them out properly but he is wondering if he can use the figures on the P800 to save him having to request copies of documentation from all his income providers going back all those years (and obviously only pay the tax that HMRC have said they would like to collect).

What would you do please?

If you are doing then need to see all documentation otherwise say good luck with things and bye.

At the end of the day you have to decide whether risking your business for him is worth it.  I would never say any one client is worth that.

Though leave the door open for him if we wants to return.

Regards

Mark

thanks. I think i knew the answer but it is going to increase the amount of tax he has to pay and I just wanted to make sure i wasn't doing that unnecessarily. I really should have more confidence in myself!

Hi, The P800 usually just gives a total figure from all jobs so if there was more than one PAYE source, he might not be able to fill in the Employer supplements correctly.

He may not legally obliged to keep some of the information for old years so he might not be as at fault as it seems.

However, it sounds like he left it too long to make a straight forward ESCA19 appeal but there's no harm in filing a late one. Try it, before the 3 month filing deadline looms.  They can only reject it.

I just won one yesterday after a two year battle. Had already got the Revenue to give up one year and they were definitely on the ropes. However, I got the taxpayer to see their MP, so unfortunately can't be 100% certain that we won the case purely on it's own merits.
