I think that my comment would have been "So, have you tried picking up your teeth with broken fingers before" (#1). Who does the cheeky jumped up little nobody think that they are!

Have you thought about a related course Alison, for example a teaching or assessor qualification in order to teach bookkeeping in adult learning?

Just a suggestion,

kindest regards,

Shaun.

#1 I think that I may have been spending too much time in Scotland! That line is just so Edinburgh.

Hi

Can anyone recommend a refresher course to do please.  I personally don't think I need it but the job centre member of staff at 6 months review (on income support as single Mum) told me that my skills very much outdated, the bookkeeping courses I did ICB are of no worth anymore, that I need to set my sites much lower and find menial work and not even consider setting up bookkeeping business again.

Think if it was not for her comment I might have just taken the plunge and set up new business (completely new area with none of the contacts I had for old business) but think can email at least one of my old client who would be happy to give me a reference.  Very tricky some of the clients as they were working acquaintances with my ex husband trouble with living in and running business in small village.

I assume the lady at the job centre knows something we don't, in that something significant in bookkeeping has changed in the last 200 years.

Other than payroll and tax, I am not sure that anything you will have studied with the ICB will be obsolete.

Thanks for replies.

I just got angry with her and told her that I don't technically have to work until my son at school (not until Sept 2015), then she said they have to encourage people back to work sooner even if allowed not to, did say that not encouragement telling me my skills were outdated. She carried on moaning about how I should find a menial job to get me off benefits and not worry about continuing what I have done since I left school, she did shut up when I said that I not quite finished going through a custody battle with my ex and still needed legal aid so could not work and how would she like it if her husband was violent to her and then tried to start a custody battle on her (she said she had children once before), she shut up then.

If they make appointment with the same person next time will ask to see someone else (if they don't and she is so patronising again will make an official complaint)

Might just be a case of using internet to update myself with payroll and tax.

Hi Alison

I'm speechless! In a nutshell you have to believe in yourself to achieve want you want in life because there will always be people out there who ultimately are interested in their own targets/feelings/wishes/selfishness blablablaa and for whatever reason do not carefully consider the impact of their words OR actions on you!

I'm the director of a company who was once told by a business advisor that my business is only successful because I'm lucky! I said as something like 85 percent of businesses fail in the first year and mine was several years old then I must be extremely lucky!

Seriously- I believe sometimes these people cross our paths for a reason. I was furious for weeks after. Then I chose to change the way I think about it - you know I'm doing what I love, how I want, when I want and ultimately I'm in control of my own destiny and earning power because I'm lucky of course lol. The business advisor of course isn't lucky and doesn't share the same benefits :))))

Perhaps that person you spoke to is in a job that they resent so they thing that's life and that's what you have to aim to achieve.

It's (. ). Fill in the blank.

So back to you....

When did you do your ICB qualification? Do you feel it's necessary to update your skills? If you start looking for work what do you think an employer would want to see? How can you give yourself an advantage in a competitive employment market?

Believe in yourself and GOOD LUCK Nothing is impossible in my opinion.

Sonya

Hi Alison

What a disgrace, talk about having your confidence knocked, I would have asked the Jobcentre employee what they know about Bookkeeping? Nick, Shaun and Sonya are spot on as you would expect.

ICB do have mock exams you can take without the need to be a member, I believe they cost around £10, assuming you want to renew your membership with the ICB you could just book yourself on to the exams without purchasing books or paying for an expensive refresher course. You could even call the ICB direct and see about gaining exemption without having to begin from Level 1 again, as I understand it if this was granted you would still need to take an entrance paper which would be charged at the equivalent fee to the level of exam you are being granted exemption! If that makes sense lol?

If wishing to go down the Self-Employment route then why not give them a call on 0845 060 2345 and explain your situation. Also as I am sure you already aware you do not require to be with any recognised body to set up as a self employed Bookkeeper as long as compliant to ML.

Now assuming your anger has subsided give us the name of this Jobcentre employee and we will send the boys round lol. Keep your chin up Alison and good luck.

I think DWP just see people as a number and have no interest in what is happening to someone on a personal level, its all about getting the people on benefit numbers down regardless of circumstance.

Take Care

Dave

You mean you haven't started learning about three dimensional (aka triple entry) bookkeeping, then? You've got some catching up to do if you're still thinking in terms of the just about obsolete double entry nonsense.

well thats just typical of training companies teaching yesterdays sollutions to tomorrows problems.

Surely you all realise that 3D bookkeeping is now so last year and the concept of bookkeeping has been superseded by the new Cloud Relational Android Phone approach.

The takeup has admitedly been slowed somewhat by it's unfortunate acronym but such is a clear step in the right direction replacing the acruals approach with the revolutionary report what you want when you want approach which has actually become an industry standard but not yet filtered through to ground floor bookkeeping and accounting practices.

The new approach has certainly received much approval from the business community that has been applying this methodology on an unofficial basis for years even though hampered by the traditional accrual approach adopted by their professional representitives who have insisted upon adjusting the books at year end to the traditionalist approach.

Advantages of the Cloud Relational Android Phone aproach include much better integration with value pricing, better client synergy, and of course, by being a cloud based methodology, C.R.A.P is availble 24/7 whereever you are (outside centres of major (capital) cities excepted).

I hope to see many more training providers teaching C.R.A.P soon rather than their current resolute position of teaching outdated traditional bookkeeping approaches.

kind regards,

Shaun.

I thought they'd now solved the acronym problem by changing the name from Cloud Relational Android Phone, especially since it's now available on iOS, to Cloud Relational User Data.

See, even I'm not abreast of the latest developments and its not as though I wasn't spending all of my time looking at the latest C.R.A.P.

I think however Vince that it's still very much a wait and see to see evolves into the industry standard.

Shaun, I was going to say 'don't worry about the C.R.A.P. because, unlike most, it is not compulsory'. Luckily, I held back because, of course, this histerical basis is compulsory for U.C. (U-bend Concept).

Alison, to brush up, i used the recent link I posted on the 'Free Training Materials' sticky.

kind regards,

Tim
