Which Tax Codes change in April ?

Which tax codes should I change on the 6th April?

I know the L codes change and I need to apply them myself - are they the only one? Do I leave all the other types T, P, K, Y until informed by HMRC? I'm sure before there was more than just the one type of code that required changing but maybe I'm thinking about back in the days of when being married affected your tax code.

Obviously most codes will probably change. You should have received a paper copy by now. If not, have you registered for PAYE Online with HMRC because you should get the details there.

I'm just after the ones that will change without the need for HMRC to inform me on each specific employee. For instance, all L codes increase by 134 - but are there any others that will change in a similar manner.

Hi Peasie,

Only the L suffix tax codes will need changing...by adding 134 to them as you said.  Any other tax codes will be notified by HMRC.

Unfortunately, no.

For example, an employee will probably have a K Code because of either car and fuel benefit scale charges OR unpaid tax from an earlier year. There are usually changes to car and fuel benefit scale charges. It is highly unlikely that unpaid tax brought forward will be the same every year!

Yes - I know the other codes will change - and HMRC will send individual notification of these changes. It's the ones that don't have individual notification that I'm looking for.

Are you registered for PAYE Online with HMRC. You can obtain them from there!

Hi Peasie, any not 'L' or with no code notice, (beware stirring a hornets nest) but I would consider querying becuase T and K would all have other changeable income.

For P and Y suffix - the allowance has been frozen, which may account for the absence of instructions:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/budget2012/income-tax-rates.htm

From 2013-14, the age-related personal allowances will not be increased and their availability will be restricted to people born on or before:

5 April 1948 for the allowance worth £10,500; and
5 April 1938 for the allowance worth £10,660.
Legislation will be included in Finance Bill 2012. People born on or after 6 April 1948 will be entitled to the personal allowance of £9,205 for 2013-14.

Regards, Tim

Hello,

What's the situation with tax code 500L. Should we add 134? Will the new tax code be 634L?

Thank you.

Just noticed that the Married Couples Allowance continues to be increased each year.
This concerns Tax Code suffix V, so I assume code notices are being issued for these individuals.
The 'Minimum Amount' of this allowance has also been increased to £3,040 - one for tax simplification if you ask me, but nobody ever does.

Also, the link in my previous post is from the time of the 2012 Budget and the personal allowance is, of course 9440 in 2013/14.
