I have a BA HONS IN ACCOUNTANCY from 1997
Permalink Closed

Hello I graduated in BA Accountancy HONS but have been unable to complete my studies going back to middle of 2000. My career has stalled and I am now lookign at ways to kick start this. Anyone else in a similar situation and if so what is best course of action. I was thinking of trying to get the book keeping certificate.

Thanks

Nishal

Hi Nishal,

You don't say what your studies were back in 2000? Was it one of the professional accountancy qualifications?

Accountancy unlike bookkeeping has changed considerably since 97 and I don't know how much use your former studies would be to you now.

The course of action that you take now all depends on where you want to get to.

Are your intentions towards bookkeeping or accountancy? Is you goal employment or self employment?

If all things considered you are going down the book-keeping road which / whose bookkeeping certificate are you looking at?

If you become a bookkeeper who do you see as your client base? What services are those clients looking for and will you ber able to provide all services that they require?

You say that your career has stalled. What career is that and is it finance related?

looking forwards to chatting once you give the site a little more information about yourself.

kind regards,

Shaun.

I tried studying CIMA passed a few in intermediate level but lost interest. Got stuck with one subject (IT related subject) and decided to have a rest and now to go back to this would be too much as I cant remember much of my theory from my BA Hons Accountancy.

I thought book keeping would be a good path as I was thinking that I could do book keeping work on the side and if it was successful then who was to say I could venture on my own one day.
Would IAB still enhance my qualifications/job prospects if I was to apply for new posts/jobs?
Please note my present position is merely processing invoices and undertaking General Ledger duties.

If all things considered you are going down the book-keeping road which / whose bookkeeping certificate are you looking at?
I am not sure to be honest? I know that there is IAB and ICB? So which one is better or ideal for me? I have looked at the 2 of them and to be honest becoming a bit over whelmed with it all.

If you become a bookkeeper who do you see as your client base? Small businesses/sole traders; Businesses where they require tax advice.

What services are those clients looking for and will you be able to provide all services that they require? Not sure how to answer this one would this not depend on what areas I would study/focus on?

You say that your career has stalled. What career is that and is it finance related?
I work in a blue chip company. I have worked in this type of organisation now for 15 years. Due to not getting through my CIMA I have ended up working in middle level finance department processing invoices, creating journals, bank reconciliation etc. Like most large multi national companies they have teams which concentrate on various areas in finance. Due to not completing my exams many moons ago the climbing of career ladder is no more and now that many graduates are coming out of University these days are now over due to competition.

I suppose I had this idea that by studying the IAB course I would be able to practice booking keeping. Again I am thinking of this being a way of bringing in more income and who knows builindg a business which one day I could maybe run from home. Maybe over ambitious but I do like to think beyond the confines of my pod I work in currently.

Thanks for replying and look forward to your advice. Again not sure if I have given enough details.

Regards

Nishal
