Tax Return Software?
Permalink Closed

I've so far just been manually inputting figures into HMRC online, but I have got quite a few potential clients wanting SA and I was wondering if it would be more efficient to get some tax return software?

I only do personal self assessment - basic, landlord & self employed & I'm currently only doing this part-time as have a small child, so dont want to be spending £1000's

Are there any software recommended?

I'm planning on getting VT Accounts package, so something that will be compatible would be great!

Hi Lyndsey

I use VT for accounts and taxcalc for tax returns.  Taxcalc costs £480 (inc VAT) for unlimited version.  It is an excellent package and personally i think it is better than IRIS which is an integrated package due to the simplestep guide.

I am trialling taxcalc accounts production at the moment and although more expensive than VT (it costs £600 for the unlimited version wheres VT i think costs about £200) I think will get it due to it being integrated with taxcalc and their new practice management module which has other benefits such as tasks monitor and mail merge.

Although taxcalc doesnt seem to be integrated in the way that IRIS is it does most of what I need for a total cost of £1080 a year compared to about £4300 for IRIS.

Regards

Mark

I've bought taxcalc accounts and tax returns. I like the new practice management module. It's brought all the customer details in from the tax returns from last year so I don't have to type all the details in again and it's going well so far. You can start with the micropractice version to make sure you like it which is much cheaper, they then let you upgrade to the unlimited version by paying the difference when you reach the maximum numbers on the micropractice. If you are only doing a few maybe the micropractice would be enough for you.

Thanks, I have had a look at Taxcalc packages & the Pro Individual 12 (£98.50 in VAT) might work for a start as at the moment I am only doing individual SA, as I'm not covered by ICB to do company returns. However I do HOPE I will get more than 12 SA this year!

Hi Ricky,

welcome to the forum.

Sorry, non bookkeeping or accountancy related links are not permitted in posts or signatures unless posted by long standing contributors and even then such requires justification (although the more relevant and helpful posts one makes the looser the justification becomes).

Shaun.

I have just purchased the TaxCalc accounts production and the TaxCalc for end of year returns, I was really impressed with the reporting system and ease of use. I trialed VT+, and although it is an excellent program for the price, I didn't need another bookkeeping package so I settled on TaxCalc, mainly due to the ingegrated practice management.

A lot of practicioners use VT and TaxCalc very happily, TaxCalc accounts production is more expensive if you are not buying the micro-practice version, so it is a matter of weighing up what you want to spend and what you really need.

 Yeah agree with the above.

I could get by as I am at the moment using VT for accounts and taxcalc for tax returns but the ease of use and integration of buying taxcalc accounts production for about £400 extra a year is worth it.  With all the accounts, personal tax returns and CT returns that I currently do it works out £4.86 for each which is worth it in my view.

Regards

Mark

BTC software is tax return software. It is compatible with VT packages. It may be useful for you.

Another vote for tax calc pro. As well being easy to use, customer support really is excellent. I have used it from the start ( originally a Which product) but this years improvements really enhanced the package.

Hi Jay,

but do you remember the first year that it wasn't a Which product!

like yourself, for self assessment I used it from the first year of self assessment but after the mess that they made of it in the year of changeover (think it was 2001 but don't quote me on that) I didn't use it again.

That said, by all accounts the travesty of the changeover year has long since been rectified returning it to it's rightful place at the top of peoples tax software shopping lists. (and back onto mine although I've not actually adopted it again yet).

all the best,

Shaun.

Hi Shamus,

I think I'm right in saying it was taken over by Intuit.
Can't remember the year,  or if I had problems, but then I sometimes have trouble remembering what happened last week.
