Qualification query

I have taken OCR Manual Bookkeeping Level 1 & 2 and C&G Computerised Bookkeeping Level 1 & 2 as they were funded through JSA. I would like to setup as home based self employed bookkeeper for small businesses. What would be the best route for further qualifications, I do not have a background in finance.

The fastest and easiest route which would be ICB which is geared towards getting people to self employment as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately that route is quicker than is healthy for them in some cases but thats a different debate.

That said the ICB qualification is going through an overhauol which from what I read will move it more towards entry level accountancy.

An ICB qualification would currently be of no use for employment and of little use for exemptions from the qualifications of other bodies. For that IAB which is an older qualification than ICB would be better for exemptions.

For employment, a good well rounded qualification that is well respected would be AAT but getting a practicing certificate from them for anything more than bookkeeping might prove problematic.

All in all, ICB, IAB or AAT are the three to consider with ICB possibly most geared towards your currentl requirement.

I'm interested to hear more about your background, intent and expectations.

I mention expectations as unfortunately there are still too many out there that believe the hype from some training providers about the amount if work and rates available and the reality seldom matches up to peoples expectations.

welcome to the forum,

kind regards,

Shaun,

Thanks for a quick reply.

Background is Telecoms, IT, Software Development and redundencies. I have some income from early company pension so looking for new challenge. As I said courses were funded while unemployed in the last year and I seem to get on ok with bookkeeping work.

Whill my level 2 certificates give me any exemption with AAt, IAB or ICB? Also how long would it take to pass the exams?
