I set up a new employee without his P45 and Moneysoft indicated he should be on 944L W1M1. He has now given me his P45 which has a different tax code on it. Should I change the tax code to the one on the P45 or leave it until HMRC tells me to change it?
Have you already paid this employee and submitted to HMRC through RTI? If so I would leave it as it is until HMRC tells you to change it. (Having said that I submitted two RTI returns for monthly paid staff with one of the employees on the wrong tax code as their P9 tax code notice had gone missing, and never heard a thing from HMRC!) Surely it is this sort of thing that RTI was designed to prevent?
If you haven't yet made any payment to the employee then I would just change the details in their record.
My son is still on an emergency tax code since Feb with his Employers - they tell me they havent received anything from HMRC with his correct tax code on it, despite RTI monthly returns. HMRC confirm they have the monthly returns and then said it could be September before they look at it! Useless bunch!
Out of interest what was his tax code?

Hi Cheshire,
Were you asking me or Princess about the tax code? If it was me, the employee's tax code was BR
Hi Pauline
I was asking Princess about the tax code. I was just mulling it over -cos I wasnt sure if it was 944L (cumulative) rather than 944L W1M1 (which might not have too much of an impact to change at this time) or some really random code. Looks like Princess is waiting for now so lets see how she gets on.
