Dr Wages expense £650 - £15.45
Dr Employers NI £62.09
Cr HMRC Liability £52.79 + £62.09 + 79.60 - (423.90 + 15.45) (actually ends up as a net Dr)
Cr Net Pay £941.51

I see our posts crossed.

I'm really struggling to get a payroll journal to balance. One of the employees was part paid SMP and part their normal salary - how do I journal it?

SMP £423.90

Basic £650.00

therefore Gross £1073.90

NIC Compensation £15.45

Emp'ee NI £52.79

Emp/er NI £62.09

Tax £79.60

Net pay £941.51

Many thanks - I can make things balance with full SMP but can't seem to make this one work with part paid.

Actually scrap this I found out why it wasn't balancing. I was putting all this in with all the payroll and the difference isn't due to the SMP at all. I found an extra payment to one of the staff on top of the net wages.
