PII through Zurich (the broker is Arlington) discounted by pretty much the cost of the membership.
MLR resources
Enrty on the find a bookkeeper database (personally not had any enquiries via that route myself yet)
There are also other bits and bobs in the members area
But of course, the main advantage of paid membership is to support a truly free and independant forum that gives advice (generally) without bias, fear or favour.
So well done David, and well done foxy a couple of weeks back for doing your bit for freedom, truth and democracy and all for a mere £24 per year.
queue flags unfurling, fireworks exploding and stiring patriotic music.
lol. Hope that your having a good day David. The £78 for insurance through Zurich though is well worth a look. You may find cheaper through Trafalgar but its not a like for like and I think that the Arlington deal is better but you will need to do your own comparrisons and reach your own conclusions.
Note, I am in no way tied financially to either the site or Arlington.
kind regards,
Shaun.

Porn... Sad muppet that I am personally I seem to get more excited by the desk calculator section in a Ryman superstore.
No, no... Leave it...

I have to admit, I had hoped there was a private forum, where we could ask daft questions without looking like a muppet to the general public... I mean, its not hard for me to do that... look like a muppet!
The other benefits listed aren't all that good - I've criticised some on these boards before - but nevertheless, they are useful at some level. Maybe we should all be invited to make contributions to improve areas we feel need it.
Absence of a porn section? ... I'll pose if you like ...
Absence of a private forum? I think a forum has to be public to be of any value.
No insult against the ICB intended here but look at their site as an example of what happens when that is the case where people pose technical questions but accountants or bookkeepers from other bodies are unable to post the correct answers.

The dating section had to be removed because there was a weirdo on there. Me.
Edit: And as for the lack of a porn section; observant members of the forum will note that my current profile picture shows me completely unclothed. Ooer, missus.

The £78 for PI insurance does look like a good deal. I am trying to find a better one but haven't so far. I have put the BKN logo on my website so I suppose that £24 for a years licence to do so isn't too bad.
I can't find the porn section, is it linked to the dating section for forum members?

I think my decision comes from a bad experience I had on another site. I wanted to hear other people thoughts on a company structure, from both business people who may have been in the same structure, or professionals who had given advice on it. I was torn apart for not knowing my job enough, to have to ask the question. It was quite embarrassing and I ended up closing my account. Thank goodness everyone here seems to realise that we cant know everything, and that actually sometimes we just want a second and third opinion.
But the worry stays with me.
I do the your point though. I guess its easy for me to say, as I am the type of person that would consider the best forum for a question to appear on.. and the majority would be public.. but I agree there would be those that wouldnt make the effort to consider that.

I like the idea of a private forum. UKBusinessForums has one, I think. Like the other day, when I was discussing that crappy client, I would have liked to discuss that with other members, without any old Joe public being able to see it. I know that I never gave anything about the client's identity, but still... I guess the solution is not to have your business name on here, but getting your name out there, is a small part of being on here in the first place.
Of course, I totally agree with only using a private forum for more sensitive matters, otherwise as you say, something vital is lost
If there were two forums then things would end up behind the wall that should discussed in public.
People would end up spending their time in either one forum or the other but not both which would end up with a two tier system of answers.
The thread that you spoke of did not start as one that would have been behind a wall.
Where matters are not for public discussion generally people PM each other off line where they have set that facility up on their profiles. (I reserve the right to post forum questions sent to me offline on the site however some contact such as those involving bullying (which we've had two cases of, both of which I sorted out) and misunderstandings, arguements and general gossip I'm quite happy to take off line.
Anyway, what I was getting to was if you set yourself up so that you can be PM'd then you have your alternate forum if you want it... Or email as we call it. lol.
Actually, if you do that it might be a good idea to set up an email account just for forum emails (personally I've got seven different email addresses all going back to different buckets in Windows live mail but I look at the qquickviews option so that I pick them all up as though it was one email address).
All the best,
Shaun.

p.s. on the business name thing its something that I watch for. There has only been one case this year where I've needed to hack someones post to remove client details.
As you say, it's unacceptable to mention client details on the site.
If I saw it I would remove it.

I know exactly what you mean in relation to bad experiences on forums as I had the same problem on our accountancy counterpart where my questions must have come accross too basic.
Think colluseum, lions and christians... Almost put me off the whole thing.
Anyway, we're talking 2008/9 here so a lot of water under the bridge since then.
A year or so later I joined this site, which was as different as chalk and cheese and made me realise that I wasn't as stupid as I had been made to feel and have since rejoined the other site able to hold my own as the difference is that I am now confident of my position where previously I had the assumption that as the new boy I must be wrong.
I suppose the good thing about my bad experience was that I, like many others here, try to make sure that this site pretty much any question is answered respectfully, taking into account the experience of the poster. Although, I have to admit that there is still the odd question or two thats been snapped at (occassionally justifiably).
I suppose though thats only human nature in that people here are entitled to have off days the same as anywhere else.
All in all though I think that the format combined with all of the contributing posters here and the regular bits of humour thrown into the mix has proven a great success.

I'm still waiting for the bit where your not allowed to get rid of me on the basis of an annulment, lol.
... And where was the wedding cake... People said that there would be cake!... I think that I was conned into this marraige. No cake, no sex and you still get half my client base on divorce.
Reminds me of a joke.
Guy goes into Toys R Us to buy a present for his neices birthday. He's just won a bit of money on the lottery and doesn't want to seem mean.
He knows that she likes barbie dolls so heads to that isle only to be met with lines and lines of hundreds of different variants.
Lost for what to buy he collars a nearby assistant and tells her that he is wants to buy a barbie for his neice.
Assistant "Well, here we have beach barbie. A very popular model and only £4.99".
The guys looks at it but feels its a bit basic and he would come accross mean so he asks what better versions do they have.
Assistant "Here we have girl about town barbie that comes with seven different outfits for only £12.99"
Ok thinks the guy, looks good and the box is big but they are still going to think that I'm being a little mean at £12.99 so asks what else they have.
Assistant "Here we have marraige barbie. A very popular model for £19.99".
The guy ponders the purchase then asks. So this is the top of the range model?
Assistant. "Oh no, we also do divorce barbie for £149.99".
Guys thinks lottery win, he would definitely be Mr popular and favorite uncle of his neice so he asks to see that one.
The assistant goes back and gets the beach barbie and says "its this one"
Guy "But thats the model for £4.99"
Assistant "Yes, but this time she comes with Kens House, Kens Car....".
lol. Is the divorce back on again as Joannes promissed cake.

LOL! If there is one thing you and I will always agree on, whether its in marriage or divorce or accounting procedure, its that there has to be cake! And lots of it!
