Hi

I've just come across this book on the internet.  Has anyone seen it/bought it and what are your thoughts on it?

Is it worth buying?

its one of the Taxcafe titles.

I asked about them some time ago see here :

www.book-keepers.org.uk/t49526229/anyone-used-taxcafe-books/

How you could make an entire book out of Salary vs Dividend though eludes me... A chapter maybe. But a whole book! Just not seeing it.

I assume that you found the book here :

www.taxcafe.co.uk/index.html

If you found it anywhere else then its a reseller as they offer quite good discounts to others to sell their books... Or to you to buy more than one book directly (i.e. 8 books gets you 40% off).

HTH,

Shaun.

Hi Shaun,

I only glanced at it. Just been back and had another look. There are 34 chapters so I think there is more than just Salary vs dividend information.

Chapter 34 - emigrating to avoid tax

That's a bit harsh!

Chapter 25 - sell your business and pay 10% tax.

There is a fair bit in but not sure I want to cough up £25.

p.s. save your money and buy Taxation by Melville.

Covers all basic tax in great detail with best part of 300 questions to drive matters home.

Its supposed to be an introductory level book but I've found myself getting the answers from it when I have been unable to find the answers on the HMRC website.

I have more advanced books than that but for an easy to read, extremely detailed book on taxation accept no substitute... Its not reached its 19th edition by accident!

Also,

just checked ACCA paper P6 kaplan study text and it manages a whole one page on salary vs Dividends and thats for something tested regularly... I just cannot see the subject matter warranting a book all to itself... Then again, big writing, small book, lots of examples, anything is possible.

Hi Eleaine,

we crossed in the post.

I think that the £25 is geared towards the assumption that most people will buy multiple books bringing the price down to £14.99 which is a more realistic price and probably the price that they were actually looking for.

Melville would be around £40 and the Kaplan study text for P6 around £32.

Although the melville may seem expensive, espechially as it has to be an annual purchase I can highly recomend it.

That said, invariably when hit with a tax problem on the site its the Kaplan P6 text that I reach for... Also, if you absolutely have to kill anyone with a book thats the one to do it with. Its 6cm thick and A4 size... Certainly get my moneys worth out of Amazon supersaver delivery with that one!
