Advise Needed - Starting AAT Level 2
Permalink Closed

Hi All,

Just joined and its my first post so sorry If I am asking  questions that have been asked before.

I want to start AAT Level 2 through completely self study route as I am not in a position to money for distance learning.

So need advice from seniors about

1) Whats the best and cheapest study material for Level 2 and from where to buy?

2) If is possible to do self study without a learning provider?

3) Sage Level 3 certification gives any exemption in AAT Level 2.

4) What is the minimum in which we can clear Level 2.

5) If I don't register with the learning provider will they allow me to take the exams.

Thanks in advance for helping in making a right choice.

Maz

Hi Maz,

1) The cheapest way of getting hold of study material is Ebay.  However, you may struggle for AAT specific material, as you will be on the new standards, which only recently came in, so there wont be many people as yet selling their books on.

2) You can do a lot of the AAT without a training provider, but there are certain units for which you must have one, for example, Computerised Accounting at level 2.

3) Re Sage exemption, possibly but it depends what it is a level in and when you sat it.

4) that depends on you, it can be done in six weeks, in fact I have a student who has done levels 2,3 and 4 in 8 months, but obviously speed isnt for everyone.

5) yes you just need to find an exam centre for external students.

Any problems just let me know,

Kind regards

Nick

I did levels 2.3 and 4 self study in a year. I bought BPP books on Amazon (about £15 a book) and sat the exams at a local BP centre who only charged me the AAT fee and no admin fee. I had to pay for the few modules that need marking as distance learning/online classroom but it worked really well. There are online questions that go with the books and sample tests so you can get ready for the real tests.

Extremely thankful Nick for reply to my queries.

Extremely thankful Princess for sharing your experience.

Few more queries.

1) I searched the internet and there is study text available from BPP, Kaplan, Osborne, which one is the best to choose?
2) Any other reference books we need to use along with these?
3) I have to give the exams of level 2 in any specific order or can give all the exams in the same go , mean to say in one or two sittings.
4) I am not doing accounts related job and just like ACCA or CIMA, do AAT students have to complete the practical training in some accounts related job before completing the AAT qualification
5) How early can I register with AAT?
6) If I register now I have to pay annual fee of 83 for 2013, I have to pay that again £83 again for annual fee after a month and few days i.e 2014 . As I plan to give exams in the new year so its better to register in new year.

Thanks in advance.

Maz

Hi Maz,

1) We use Osborne books at Premier and they have grown on me and i prefer them.  Initially i prefered the Kaplan books, which used for my AAT.  I have heard lots of complaints about them, but personally I thought they were good.  As for BPP, we have just taken in a set of BPP books, as they are trying to get us to use them.  Briefly looking at them they look good, if a little dry.

2) Frank Woods is one i recommend but you shouldn't need any other than your text books.

3) You can sit them in any order and can sit any number on one day.  We had one guy who passed 4 exams on one day, however, i would suggest you start with the manual bookkeeping units before the computerised unit.

4) No you can complete the qualification without any experience, however, if you want the letters or a practice licence you need experience.

5) Today!

6) No, it will be 12 months from today.

Any problems just let me know.

Kind regards

Nick

Once again extremely thankful Nick for answering my queries.

Only thing that you mentioned and I need clarification

4) No you can complete the qualification without any experience, however, if you want the letters or a practice licence you need experience.

Obviously I need the letters and at a later stage a practice license , what kind of experience / job/ role I need as I am working in an organization , doing their Account/Admin/ managerial work but not sure whether that will count as the experience towards getting MAAT words and practise license

Hopefully the answer to this will resolve all my queries.

Thanks in advance again.

Maz

Thanks in advance
