When preparing your accounts

Mileage goes under motor expenses

Use of home goes to heat & light

You need to keep a mileage log showing every mile travelled on business, (client/location/distance/reason for visit)

rate is 45p per mile for the first 10k, 25p per mile thereafter.

Home to regular place of work is not allowable and there is a two year rule for temporary workplaces.

There are several ways of calculating use of home the simplest being £4 per week (see here : www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/relief-household.htm)

You must be able to show the breakdown of your business expenses in your accounts but provided that your business turnover is less than £73k in your self assessment you can put the total allowable expenses in box 19 of the SA103s rather than breaking the allowable expenses down into their constituent parts.

HTH,

Shaun.

p.s. I've amended your post as there was a page of blank space after the writing.

Shaun,

I have a couple of clients from whom I visit their premises to collect their accounts and one whom I do a site visit once a month for. Can you confirm that I am allowed to claim for the mileage to collect the accounts but not for the site visit?

Hi Katie,

Good news...

You can claim for both as the visit to the site is not a pseudo permanent place of work. You are simply visiting a client once a month to sort out their paperwork rather than being a true temporary worker at a pseudo employers establishment. (Which is where the temporary workplace rules come in).

kind regards,

Shaun.
