My self employed conference speaker wants to offset his purchase of books against tax. They are always relevant to his subject. Is this allowed by HMRC?

yes.

Provided that the expense of the books is incurred wholly, necessarily and exclusively for the purpose of the business they will be allowable.

Hi Shaun,

just for information, this only needs to be wholly and exclusively...not necessarily

Shhh, don't tell them... Your spoiling my misinformation campaign, lol.

I know, I keep slipping the bit in there that applies to employee's claiming expenses only just to make the readers extra vigilant about what they allow through.

The example that is always quoted nowadays is the Ipad. For an employee generally the latest fancy must have gadget is not allowable because it is not necessary in order to do their work but for a business owner using it for work even though its not necessary it is allowable.

Anyway other readers, despite Rob spotting my intentional misinformation there, just keep being extra vigillant and keep giving your clients a hard time about their wanton irrational use of company funds.
