Hello,

I would like to introduce myself; my name is Chris and I work as an junior accountant in Warsaw, Poland.

I joined this forum because I am very interested in obtaining the knowledge in the field of UK accountancy.

It's worth mentioning that I would be honored if I coud find someone brave enought to talk with me on Skype. I hope that I'm able to understand you :)

Cheerio,

Chris

Hi Chris,

welcome to the forum.

Don't think that you will get any takers on a Skype chat, not really the way that the site works as when you post you are chatting with a lot of people rather than just one so the person who posts a first answer may not be the one who posts the last one... Plus of course many (myself included) just don't use skype.

UK GAAP is slowly turning into IFRS. FRS102 is being implemented next year which is a major change bring us more in line with IFRS (strange that there have been no questions on here about it?).

Our tax system is confusing to the point where you really need to live it to understand it. However the UK variant of ACCA paper F6 study text from either Kaplan or BPP would be a good start point.

Obviously you are looking at the UK system with a view to seeking work here.

Worth mentioning before you invest too much time, effort and money in acquiring skills for a role here is that the UK market has a lot of unemployed accountants and bookkeepers.

Many on here are not self employed by choice and self employment brings with it the anguish of finding enough clients to survive.

The above warnings aside quality accountants with good qualifications such as ACCA will find it wasier than many to move between countries if such is their desire.

Good luck with whatever your aspirations are,

kind regards,

Shaun.

Shamus,

Thanks for your reply! I would like to ask a few questions out of curiosity. Forgive me please my grammar.  I'll try do my best.

Firstly, till the time of full change into IFRSs - are UK GAAPs gathered together as a regular law act? One document, all the provisions? Additionally, where can I look for them?

I've always wanted to compare Polish taxation with the another one because major part of my customers said that you can't find such complex taxation system as it is here. I renew my question - where can I find it? :)

As for looking the job in UK - yes, it came through my mind but honestly, I know that chance of getting job by the person like me (without international qualifications) is equal to zero. For your information, the accountancy market in Poland also goes bad nowadays. I can't complain about that because I have stable job in big company. Our customers are mostly Funds from Belgium, Luxembourg and Uk too.

I know that my introduction went not as good as I thought but one of the reason of my question regarding chatting on the Skype is developing speaking skills and looking for information how life looks like in the other country. We have Polish proverb "cudze chwalicie, swego nie znacie" which literally can te translated as "others praise of the fence" :)

To sum up, thanks again for the useful advice and information. I'll keep looking.

Kind regards,

Christopher or rather I should write - Krzysztof

UK Accounting standards (commonly known as UK GAAP) is a collection of FRS's and SSAPs which are controlled by the FRC. Whilst the standards are not enshrined in law they are given legal status by the companies act divesting authority to them.

here is a link to find out all about UK accounting standards : https://www.frc.org.uk/

I've always wanted to compare Polish taxation with the another one because major part of my customers said that you can't find such complex taxation system as it is here. I renew my question - where can I find it? :)

As mentioned in my first reply. Look at the UK variant of the study text for ACCA paper F6. The current Finance act is FA13. (both BPP and Kaplan produce versions of this book).

Alternatively look at the book Taxation by Alan Melville. Again FA13 variant.

You need a study text such as one of the above to understand the basics before you are able to find what you are looking for on the HMRC website.

All books are available through Amazon.

As for looking the job in UK - yes, it came through my mind but honestly, I know that chance of getting job by the person like me (without international qualifications) is equal to zero. Do not despair. It sounds as if you have a good job in accountancy. There are international qualifications such as ACCA which is a global brand and can open doors to many countries.

In the UK we have many Polish people who work hard and often start their own businesses. If you had the right qualifications your language skills could make you of interest to accountancy practices in areas such as Boston in Lincolnshire with large Polish communities.

The downside is that you could spend a lot of money getting a qualification with no guarantee of a job at the end of it so it would be a big risk if you went down that path.

Sorry, that sentence doesn't make sense to me? The word praise doesn't seem to be the right one. In the UK there's a saying that goes "The other side of the fence" which is used in several different contexts.

One of those is that "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence"... Of course, when you get there its exactly the same as in the field that one came from.

There's an analogy hidden in there.

To sum up, thanks again for the useful advice and information. I'll keep looking.

Good luck Krzysztof.

Shaun.
