I am currently working on my continuing professional development so that I can obtain a practising certificate from the AAT.
I need to do a general refresh of my financial accounting knowledge. My goal is to ensure that I am up to date with current practice for preparing final accounts for sole traders, partnerships and small limited companies.
I am intending buy the relevant AAT texts from Osborne Books.
However, I was wondering if there are any other books that anyone would recommend. I have an old 1993 copy of Spicer and Pegler's Book-keeping and Accounts which was a detailed technical manual of current practice at the time. This is not being produced any more. Does anyone know if there is anything similar available today?
Just had a look inside it David (there's a version on Amazon with a look inside) and first reaction was... Ooh, I've seen that before.
A very similar book to that one was "A students guide to accounting and financial reporting standards" by Geoff Black... Unfortunately thats from 2004 and is itself out of date. (i.e. still refers to FRS14 rather than FRS22).
It did however show me the sort of thing that you are looking for.
Actually, I've got a book here by Paul Gee who is the author of the book that you speak of. Its published by CIMA but its not one of their study texts.
Flicking through it does seem to follow the same format as the book that you have from 93.
My version is 2006. see here for a version that you can look inside :
Its a good book if a little out of date... Although not as out of date as your 93 version so might still prove useful.
For UK GAAP we really are in an all change environment at the moment with the advent of FRS102 which is effectively implementing IFRS by any other name so not sure how much use any of the current texts available in the market place will be to you.
Good luck with fining one thats right for you and if I have any other thoughts I'll post a follow up.
kind regards,
Shaun.
