What to do in Edinburgh ?
Permalink Closed

Hello.

After a very busy period I need to travel somewhere and try new things.

I am considering Edinburgh for a weekend, I have searched online for things to do, but nothing compares with fresh information from real people who have already been there or who actually live there.

Please if possible, I would welcome your thoughts and experiences.

Thanks a lot !

Kind regards,

Adrian

Just go there and wander around a bit.

Personally I find nothing worse than going to a new country or city with an itinery. Even when I travel to the other side of the world I don't have hotels booked and I carry only what I can take on the plane as carry on luggage (used to drive my ex scatty).

When in Edinburgh I live there so don't really do any of the touristy things like the castle and the Fringe festival. There are some decent pubs, restaurants and theatres there but all pretty much of the same that you find anywhere else in the UK.

I think that the anatomical museum of Edinburgh Uni is worth a visit if thats your sort of thing. Plus they've got a good National Gallery down near Princess street.

Best thing that you can do is just take a wander around without a plan, investigating all the little alleyways to see what you can find. Its only a very small city with the feel of a large town so don't factor in too many days there (I think that your idea of a weekend is about right) but as you've travelled all the way there why not stay longer. Get back on your bike and go North to the real Scotland. Go see Stirling, visit the locks, see some mountains, go savour some real scots hospitality.

Above all, have fun,

Shaun.

I'm quite sure he'd find some Scot's hospitality if he went investigating all the little alleyways.

Lol Peasie,

I meant the little alleyways off Princess street / Cowgate / Royal Mile etc.

Like London I get the impression that Edinburgh is a safe place provided that you stick to the tourist area's. Certainly I never felt threatened there and the only two times I came close to fisty cuffs one was with an Italian and the other was with an English street performer doing the fringe who was blocking the pavement between me and my car on a Friday evening when I was focused on getting back to my boy.

In London the safe bit is everything North of the river to Euston. Venture beyond that at your Peril.

Birmingham you stick around New Street / Corporation street.

Wolverhampton... Well Wolverhampton you would take Body armour and a semi automatic.... Then again, I can't think of any good reason for going there anyway.

I think closes is the word you're looking for Shaun. I love Edinburgh. As well as the Castle there are loads of ghostwalks. Some are great, some not so. I also really enjoy the odd visit to the Edinburgh Dungeons. The Royal Yacht Britannia is docked at Leith and I've wanted to go for a few years but never got yet.

Go on one of the walking tours of the royal mile if you have a few hours to spare.

then you have the ghost walk tours.

you can always jump on the train and 40mins later you are in my area of Stirling which has the castle, Wallace monument (William Wallace) also plenty on this year to mark the 700th anniversary of the battle of bannockburn (1314)

Well, thats two votes for Stirling Mark.

The wallace monuments great but has the scariest staircase that I've ever climbed especially when you encounter another bunch of people going in the opposit direction.

Wonder if England and Wales will get their fingers out next year on Saint Crispens day to celebrate 600 years since Agincourt... I'll have money on it that there's nothing as the Government always seems to be far too worried about offending someone. We should be more like the Scots and actually celebrate our History... Well, bits of it anyway...

Back to Edinburgh, I remember the last time that I was there someone in the office mentioned visiting the under city that got sealed off during the black death? I didn't get chance to go along. (Don't even know where the entrance woud be) but it sounded an interesting tour of a completely hidden labyrinth of burried streets.

Thank Shaun, Peasie, Khris and Mark,

Yes !
I have booked my ticket, Thursday Ill be in.
It sure looks like a fine place to visit: under city, ghosts walks, palace, dungeons.

I will be in from Thursday to Saturday as Sunday morning I have to get the bus 5 am.
If there is someone who want to join my for a pint or a walk, it will be great to see people that I am chatting for a year online but never got the chance to see in the real world.
I ll buy the beers !

Have a good week !

Adrian

Go and see Greyfriars Bobby... very cute! (dont tell anyone I coo'd over a dog statue!)

Avoid deep friend mars bars :) Avoid that thing they call a parliament building

Try white pudding.

Go on the old reekie walk

Take in St Giles church

They also do a red bus route, that's not bad for a whistle stop tour and then you can go back to the places that peaked your interest later

Most importantly... have fun and drink lots of whisky!

I may start with the whisky on Thursday evening. Just to have a feel of the place.

I cant wait to get there. Only one day left !!!
