I have been involved in accounts departments on and off for the last 8 years, also doing my family business accounts in excel for several years.
but have no formal qualifications in this area, i have enjoyed my experience in this area. i have just lost my job and decided to try and get into the whole accounts scene, so my question is:-
Which qualification would you recommend to get into this area?
i would like to go self employed in the future as a book keeper?
Firstly, welcome to the forum. The fact that you mentioned self employment I would recommend the range of practical qualifications on offer via ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers), who are set up specifically to help those with the ambition of setting out on their own as bookkeepers.
If you are looking for formal training you'll find a full list of training providers for these course, one of which is my own college, via the following link: https://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/Study--Qualifications/Bookkeeping-Courses
There are other qualifications, such as AAT, which is aimed more at the accountancy route, where they will put initial restrictions on you in terms of self-employment.
I was of the understanding that AAT require you to have gained a certain amount of practical experience once qualified before allowing you to practice on your own, under their umbrella.
And doing AAT will give you the option of getting a practice licence with either AAT/ICB/IAB or using the AAT qualification to gain employment.
You keep either option open so to me it's a no brainer.

Thanks For the replys Guys, I was thinking aat route, but reading other post on the site it looks like all the course will get me there, but its the aat seams to open the most doors, I wanted to work for a practice anyhow before starting out on my own. i need to pay back the training before flying solo with a family to support etc.
Is there any financial help ( grants etc ) for over 30`s any one know?
