Im an Open Uni student doing a degree in Business and Accounting. My friend who is doing the same degree is currently doing AAT L3 and said it has helped her immensely.
1) I'd like to self study - I've read that's possible, just certain modules like computerised accounting I would have to go through a provider.
2) I'm assuming I will need to register with AAT before I sit my first exam? When registering, they ask for a provider - do I just choose the provider with whom I'd take the occasional compulsory modules/sit exams?
With AAT as you say you would have to have a training provider for certain modules.
Have your thought about ACCA rather than AAT?
You don't need a training provider at all. As well as going hand n hand with your degree there are additional free lectures available on opentuition, The bulk of the AAT syllabus (which is very good) is included in the first three ACCA papers (You will take 14 in all)
Doing this you get a head start on a qualification higher up the tree which will go nicely hand in hand with your business studies degree to give you a real chance of finding employment.
The downside with ACCA is that everythng in your degreee will also be in the ACCA syllabus (so quite a lot of repetition, although you will have that to a lesser extent with AAT as well).
The first nine papers are the equivalent of a BSc. The last five are at MSc level.
HTH,
kind regards,
Shaun.

I have been thinking of ACCA too, yes. I'm currently struggling a bit with my uni course (Management accounting) and my friend (who's on the same uni course as me) said it has helped her a lot doing AAT. So my idea was to do AAT to get better on track with uni and then move to ACCA at a later date. Would that be an overkill?
With AAT the management accounting starts at level III. With ACCA it's paper F2 (or the old paper 1.2, the materials pretty much the same as management accounting unlike financial accounting never really changes).
I know where your coming from as I did the old OU certificate in accounting (B680) at the same time as starting out ACCA and the two really compliment each other.
Plus there is so much free ACCA stuff available from old exam papers on the ACCA site to Opentuition lectures.
Of course, the other alternative is that you talk through on here the bits of management accounting that you are having issues with and peple here will also chp in and help.
Regardless as to whether you do ACCA or not, if you want to get on top of management accounting you could always purchase the Kaplan study texts for ACCA paper F2.
I say Kaplan rather than BPP as Kaplan tends to be more example driven.
And thats the key to management accounting. practice, practice, practice.
Got to go do stuff now but happy to answer any questions later / tomorrow.
Talk soon,
Shaun.
