1. Is it just the tax return or does he want you to do his accounts? (assuming it a "he")
2. Does he have other income eg dividends, interest, rent from property?
3. If wants you to do the accounts how organised are the accounting records? Will he give you a fully reconciled file on an accounts package or will he give you a bag or invoices, receipts and bank statements and wish you all the best.
4. What is his turnover?
5. Is he registered for VAT? Does he want you to do VAT returns?
So not just a one price fits all as depends on what he needs.
Though I work with fixed prices based on turnover and quality of records ie gold/sillver/bronze based on me doing everything/giving them free online software/them keeping the records themselves.
I don't alter price myself according to turnover but I suspect the reason may be down to the risk involved with higher turnover. If you make a mistake with a higher turnover company it cost result in a greater financial cost to them and in turn a greater financial cost to yourself when they decide to sue you.

Out of interest, why would their turnover affect the prive you quote?
Higher turnover then all things being equal
1. Greater financial risk from your viewpoint if things go wrong
2. Higher volume of paperwork
3. More incentive for looking at tax saving opportunities
I recently lost a client whose turnover more than doubled and he was expecting me to do the everything for the same price as the year before. If he can find someone who can who can take the job at the same price with the turnover more than doubled then not a problem from my viewpoint as I got enough work not to be bothered.
I've just recently lost one too, he was one of my cheaper ones anyway and they decided to save money and do it themselves, well we all know the accountants bill will now increase but hey ho that is not my problem. Anyway replaced him with 2 new clients worth a lot more money to me, and the first client came along 4 days after I lost him, and the 2nd one the week after so not bad really!
Onwards and upwards, I have decided you can't win them all, there will always be someone out there either wanting to do it themselves or finding someone to do it for less. I will not undervalue myself, I want to be paid for what I am worth now. In the early days I was too cheap but now I just say the price and if they don't like then they can go elsewhere.
Never under value what you are worth! God I am sounding like Bob Harper!!! Where is he by the way, he hasn't been on here for a long time?.................
