Return Question
Permalink Closed

Hi I have a client who was previously self employed, but ceased trading on 04.12.2012. This date of cessation was included in the last return I completed for him for 2012/13. He has since been employed by the company, but has recently received a SA100 for 2013/14. He has no other income. Q. 1.Does this have to be completed or can it be waived. 2. Should I contact HMRC as his agent and ask inform them that his circumstances have changed in order for him to stop receiving these? Thanks

Once people are on self assessment they are on it forever or until you get agreement from HMRC that such is no longer required.

One can continue to do the self assessments which are very easy documents anyway if all that you're doing is employment or you can contact the self assessment helpline to get the self assessments stopped.

If your client has already receved one for the current year I would do it but consider whether to cancel going forwards.

Shaun.

Hi Stevie,

yes if the return has been issued then it must be completed. Obviously it will be an easy one to do. Do tell HMRC that he is now employed and see if he can be taken off, however I have had to do the tax return for an ex client who retired and only has his state pension now for the last FOUR years and every year we call HMRC to tell them he should not be receiving a tax return. I don't charge him but it is very unfair to ask a near 70 year old to keep having to submit a tax return.

Yes spooky!! I had just come in to the office to get a couple of sets of accounts ready for Monday but had a quick look here first, then walked the dog but I guess I should finally do what I came in for!

That's interesting Sharon, it's never worked for me in the past so maybe there has been a change of policy. I shall try this!
